Thoughts of the Season - December 14, 2010

Thoughts of the Season

Far from the hills of Afghanistan
Guns sound on American streets,
An innocent teen falls to the ground,
As his heart pumps its final few beats.

A mother pauses in cooking a meal,
In a home full of bright Christmas cheer,
As uniformed officers solemnly tell,
News she never thought she would hear.

So many go hungry all over the world,
They don’t have a feeling of joy,
No stockings are filled with wondrous treats,
For a good little girl or a boy.

In this season of love, goodwill to all men,
Terrorism is something we dread,
Why can’t we all aim for world peace,
And learn to negotiate instead.

We are all brothers, perhaps different colors,
Who share the holy seasons on earth,
May we join in our blessings, look into our hearts,
And see the value of each human’s worth.

A poem of sad truth, and until we learn to share and care for one another there will always be strife.

  12. Amidst all the shopping and feasting, I think many people lose sight of the reason for the season, which you emphasized quite well. Nice One Shot, Carmen!

  15. This is a very touching poem/prayer and I hope that everyone will stop and think of the true meaning of Christmas amidst the hustle & bustle.

I'm really sorry to hear of the predicament that you find yourself in.
Hoping the New Year brings new hope and happier times.

    Brian Miller -
Sadly, I don't think wishes are going to make the violence in our streets abate at all!

    Josep -
I'm glad you liked my poem. It speaks of things that are important but I think no one hears these pleas at all. The world seems to get crazier and crazier.

    Travelingjoan -
I hope your holidays are wonderful, too, and many thanks, by the way, for that wonderful get well card. You have such a talent for creating those cards!!

    Dulce -
My dear poetess, whose words are always so eloquent, I'm glad my poem pleased you.

    Sharkbytes (TM) -
You are right, Joan - those in power don't seem to want to negotiate and, without them, we peons can't accomplish much.

    moondustwriter -
The holiday season always makes me wish for world peace. I guess it is rather naive of me to think it is a possiblity!

    Cor -
Thank you for your kind words.

    Joanny -
Mankind certainly has a long way to go to accomplish peace and good will!

    Claudia -
My poem doesn't reach far enough, I'm afraid, to do any good but I'm glad you liked it.

    drybottomgirl -
Thanks for reading my poem and appreciating its message.

    sm -
Nice to hear from you, my faraway friend. Would love to be in India for this holiday season and I should have, if ill health hadn't interfered.

    Eric Alder -
Definitely, it is easy to get caught up in the commercialism of the holidays and forget all else.

    faith -
I appreciate your visit! Come again.

    Joanna Jenkins -
I don't think I'll live long enough to see my Christmas prayers realized but I never give up hope.

    Maggie May -
This will be a year of change for me but I hope I endure and come out better for it all. Nice to have you visit.

    booguloo -
We've never met before so it is very nice to have you stop by!

  18. i really wish to live in a peaceful world someday...... i feel glad being from a part of the world .... where the conditions aren't as bad as Afghanistan or Iraq......

the natives being killed.... then the army men who come from different countries to form a democratic government in another country.... die for the love of their country....... though i respect all of them for sacrifing ther life for their countries..... but at the end i always think ... is it really necessary...... i think we all can live peacefully.... war will only lead to bad .... nothing good comes out of a war..... hope Iraq was will also some day.... would stop......
