Six Word Friday - Circle - June 27, 2014

Matillija poppy - egg yolk circle center,
Large crinkly white crepe paper petals,
Tall blooms, waving in the wind,
Enticing buzzing visitors seeking nectar nirvana.

Three Word Wednesday - To Take a Chance - June 25, 2014

She had always been the shyest child,
Never straying very far,
She walked the straight and narrow,
Avoiding anything bizarre.

She chose a college close to home,
And did her family proud,
She stayed within the limits,
Never breaching what allowed.

With her degree in finance,
Employment offers came her way,
But when she made her choice,
Her parents protested in dismay.

"A third world country," they exclaimed,
"It's such a risky place,"
"For all you knnow, you'll disapp   ear,
And be lost without a trace."

In spite of opposition,
She calmly moved ahead,
Got her passport, vaccinations,
With not a bit of dread!

"Your life will be in jeopardy,"
Her mother's chants rang out,
All felt she'd last, at best, a month,
Beyond a shadow of a doubt.

As soon as her plane landed,
A cathartic spell took hold,
And her true, adventurous spirit,
Was free, now, to unfold.

She thrived in this huge country,
With customs and cultures new,
Embracing all it offered,
And, for this, she was welcomed, too.

UE's Weekend Challenge: Jewelry - Saturday, June 21, 2014

I love the jewelry in India.  During my 15 months of living there recently, I bought
a few dangly earrings ( costume jewelry only, of course ) but I so enjoying wearing
them.

I was once invited to a Hindu celebration called Karva Chauth, where women fast
from sunrise to the rising of the moon, to pray for the safety and longevity of their
husbands.  The ladies gather together, dressed in their best clothing, often their
wedding finery. beautiful jewelry, and make up and go through rituals, chanting and
rituals together until moonrise when their husbands arrive to give their wives water
to break their fasts.

It was a most beautiful event and the women were as colorful as a field of flowers
in bloom.  I was honored to be invited to participate.

And, no, there is no reciprocal day of fasting for the safety and longevity of the wives.

Candy Crush Saga - June 19, 2014

Candy Crush Saga

I have a life long friend,
Who has meant the world to me,
We've always stayed in touch,
No matter where we'd be.

Camilla was my dorm mate,
Over fifty years ago,
In our freshman year of high school,
Which we said we hated so.

In spite of being very strict,
With three study halls a day,
We  forged the strongest friendships,
And got in a little play.

We were together only 9th grade,
But if we were ever near,
We always saw each other,
And years seemed to disappear

During January, I visited Atlanta,
Spending five days with Camilla and Dave,
We shivered and reminisced together,
In the throes of an icy cold wave!

We had yummy venison sausage,
And martinis fit for a queen,
But she turned me into an addict,
On something totally unforseen.

Every night, she got out her computer,
And started frantically playing a game,
It's called "Candy Crush Saga," she said,
When I demanded to know the game's name.

But don't ever start, she admonished,
You will never be able to quit,
How right she was with her warning,
I am really having a fit.

I admit I am playing quite often,
And I don't find it very much fun.
No matter how fast my fingers are racing,
I can never pass twenty-one!!

Thanks a million, Camilla.

Theme Thursday for June 12, 2014 - LONELY - June 11, 2014

Lonely

The sea stretches out forever,
As far as the eye can see,
Waves lapping gently at the shore,
And I'm alone as I can be.

The breeze whispers in the palms,
Making music in my ears,
I am in total solitude,
But I haven't any fears.

Little crabs scurry on the sand,
The sunset warms my heart,
I escape from a crowded, angry world,
To help my healing start.

I find solace all around me,
In the peace and beauty here,
I'm alone but I'm not lonely,
 Worries and problems disappear.

Six Word Fridays - No Ambulanza for Me - June 5, 2014

Give me bellinis at Harry's Bar,
Or tourists at St. Mark's Square,
Or a splishy splashy gondola ride,
But no ambulanza while I'm there!!

Little Things Thursdays - California Poppies - June 4, 2014

A field of bright orange California poppies ( Eschscholzia californica ), designated
our state flower in 1903, is a joy to behold.  They grow wild all over the state and
should be started from seed and allowed to reseed every year.

Unfortunately, this poppy has been almost completely devoured by this worm
or caterpillar!
