Flash 55 Friday - Drago's Seafood Restaurant, Metairie, LA - October 22, 2010

Flash 55 Friday - Drago's Seafood Restaurant, Metairie, LA - October 22, 2010

I was barely off the airplane,
When I settled down to dine,
At a favorite New Orleans restaurant,
With dishes most divine!

We began with charbroiled oysters,
Then, much to my delight,
The waiter announced the special,
Soft shell crabs were on that night!!

Welcome back to New Orleans,
Land of jazz and great cuisines!

Drago and his wife, Klara Cvitanovich, are descendants of New Orleans' Croatian
community, dating back to the 1800's.  After working first at his brother-in-law's
restaurant, then the Acme Oyster House, Drago finally opened  his own place in Feb
of 1969.  It is definitely a family affair, with his wife welcoming guests and Drago, until
recent years, shucking oysters, tending bar, and buying oysters from Croatian oyster
men in Plaquemines Parish.  His son, Tommy, now runs the restaurant and its second
location at the New Orleans Hilton.

Two signature dishes are their charbroiled oysters and Mama Ruth's gumbo.

  1. I've just put New Orleans on my "bucket list". There was an AA convention there one year and now I could kick myself for not going.

  5. I was in New Orleans in 1980 with 40,000 of my best friends. It was a fabulous experience. About 100 of us flew in from Vancouver, BC, a week before the convention so we could take in the music, atmosphere and food. I'm so grateful I was able to be there -- I know what it means to miss New Orleans!!

    Brian Miller -
There weren't any boiled crawfish but my friend had them in her freezer and made a fantastic crawfish etouffe for me my last night in town.
When I was in nursing school from 1962 t0 1965,
you could get 3 lbs of them, boiled, for only
    one dollar!

I am so glad you got my book, at last. I'll be interested to know what you thought of my poems.

    Kay L.Davies -
We had a big forensic nursing conference a few years ago and a group of my friends went with me a few days early so I could show them all my old haunts. It was so much fun. I introduced them to all my classmates there and, boy, did they tell stories on me.

    Pritty -
I'm so glad you stopped by. I hope you'll visit often.

    Eric Alder -

Teddy is certainly getting bigger! It sounds like you are staying quite busy.

New Orleans has to be one of the best places in the country to eat. I never tire of the seafood.
