Bubble Gum Pink - March 8, 2013

Perhaps it’s not your cup of tea,
Houses painted pink,
Before I’d choose to live in it,
I’d really have to think.

I’m more a fan of yellow,
Cheery like the sun,
I’ve seen some bright Victorians,
That look like so much fun.

In San Francisco, you will find,
House colors really blow your mind.

Friday Flash 55 - Ohhhh, That Feels Good - September 14, 2012

We people of the human race,
Complain and carry on,
In keeping up with the Joneses,
Soon our money's gone.

At least we have two hands,
To scratch if we should itch,
Just think of this fat piggy,
When her skin begins to twitch!

 Pretty smart, I must say,
A "scratching" post saved the day!

I am taking part in Friday Flash 55.
Join MrKnowItAll & the gang to
have some fun.

As I headed to the market in Jaipur, I came upon a pig entourage.
Mama and three babies.  Babies had to wait while Mama
scratched her neck, then turned around and scratched
her backside.

Friday Flash 55 - Not Gone, But Forgotten - November 11, 2011

I'm stilll around,
Not posting much,
A couple days a week or such.

It's been just hell,
Sorting through my life,
Discarding much has caused such strife.

I'm nearly done,
The end's in sight,
December 1st, I'll board my flight.

I'll have four months,
To get to know,
An exotic country that I love so.

Friday Flash 55 - Enough Already!!! - September 16, 2011

I've been getting lots of shots,
And I still will get some more,
Thyphoid, DPT -
My arms are getting sore.

Japanese encephalitis,
And I got a rabies, too,
You'd think with all of those,
I would, at last, be through!

Alas, three more I've left to take,
Let's hope they'll be a piece of cake!

Time is growing shorter and I am in panic mode!  In 38 days, I'll board that
Air France flight for India.  I have to be out of my house by October 15th,
though, a week prior, and I am not quite up to speed in packing and getting my
things in storage.

I am so happy, though, that my health insurance is covering my shots!
The Japanese encephalitis and rabies vaccines carry a hefty price tag -
$200 each - but my wonderful travel clinic nurse talked to my insurance
carrier and I do not have to pay it myself.  I've ordered all my regular
medicines for the duration of my stay since the CDC recommends that
all prescription drugs be purchased in the U.S.  My son, Jeremy, is
planning to come visit me so he'll bring my refills since my online
phamarcy can only fill 90 days at a time.  I know my luggage is
definitely going to be overweight!!

I haven't yet begun to get excited but, as the house begins to empty out
and my suitcases are packed, I know I will begin to get excited.  I will
send for my Indian visa soon and it will really feel like a reality.

I'm going to India!

Friday Flash 55 - Another Royal Wedding - July 1, 2011

Today, a prince will marry,
In a land of wealth and fame,
But for me, I'm thinking,
It will never be the same.

I loved Prince Albert's mother,
And recall her wedding day,
Grace, the ultimate in elegance,
A princess in every way!

Albert and Charlene -
I wish you joy - and a bouncing baby boy!

Friday Flash 55 - His Fate Was SEALed - May 6, 2011

Thanks to heroic Navy SEALS,
Osama's met his fate,
This evil man caused endless pain,
Who was so filled with hate.

We know his life hereafter,
Won't find him resting well,
For he is doomed forever,
To eternity in HELL!

My prayers go out to all who suffered, and still suffer, because of this man.

Friday Flash 55 - Down the Rabbit Hole - April 22, 2011

I saw the wierdest rabbit,
He was very strange to me,
I hadn't had a single drink,
So I was sober as could be.

He hippity hopped everywhere,
Leaving baskets that he'd made,
They were really exceptional,
For these were eggs HE'D laid!!

Hens asked to have a little rest,
Easter bunny passed the test!

Friday Flash 55 - Those Were The Days - April 15, 2011

Once again it's Friday,
Just another day for me,
I often think of yesteryear,
And what fun it used to be!

Young nurses, just off duty,
We'd head to Bourbon Street,
To imbibe on tasty hurricanes,
And indulge our dancing feet.

An exciting place, that New Orleans,
Home of voodoo, jazz, and Mardi Gras queens!

Friday Flash 55 - A Whole Lot of Shaking Going On - April 8, 2011

Japan has faced another quake,
With so much yet to do,
It seems so overwhelming,
With all that they've been through.

In Mexico, a quake was felt,
I felt a pang of fear,
With all this seismic turmoil,
Will San Francisco have one here?

In 1989, we had a 6.9 earthquake which was pretty scary!

Friday Flash 55 - Raging at Cancer - March 11, 2011

Today, my nose is cancer free,
For that, I am most grateful,
But the quite extensive surgery,
Has left me feeling hateful.

They had to do a skin flap,
To close the wound it made,
Now I'll look like Frankenstein,
If I have my face displayed.

Well, I need to get myself a veil!

Flash 55 Friday - The Way We Were, #1 - Aloha - January 7, 2011

Carmen in Honolulu in 1976, 32-years-old

No turkey neck that I can see,
No wrinkles on my face,
Though my butt is hidden in this shot,
There's no cellulite any place.

At sixty-six, all that has changed,
The leis still would fit,
But the lovely dress I wore back then,
I long ago got rid of it.

What great memories!

Flash 55 Friday - Happy New Year - December 31, 2010

Another year comes to an end,
I'm not so sad to see it go,
It wasn't really great for me,
It was full of misery and woe.

I look, with hope, to days ahead,
Of better times and sunny skies,
My life's in flux, there's change for me,
All to come with the year's demise.

Flash 55 Friday - Happy 40th Birthday, Shawn - December 17, 2010

Flash 55 Friday - Happy 40th Birthday, Shawn - December 17, 2010

Forty years ago today,
A blizzard howled outside,
But the contractions I was feeling,
Couldn't be denied!

In treacherous conditions,
We drove for forty miles,
But when Shawn finally exited,
My face was full of smiles.

First born of three, Shawn set the pace,
And his brothers soon were giving chase.

Happy birthday,  oldest son!

I am taking part in Mr. G-Man's Flash 55 Friday - check it out and see what the others have done!

Shawn Edward Smith

12 - 17 - 70

It's hard for me to believe, Shawn, that you are already forty-years-old.  How is that
possible?  It seems like only yesterday, I was waddling about, having gained 50 pounds
during my pregnancy, setting up the nursery in the apartment your dad and I rented over
a veterinarian's office in Lexington, Massachusetts, just outside Hanscom Field where
your father was a Lt. in the Air Force.

I woke early the morning of December 17th, about 5AM, if I recall, because I was having
some cramping and my membranes had ruptured.  We were in the throes of a major
snowstorm and, after I took a shower, we had about forty miles to drive to the hospital.
When we looked out the window, the snow had stopped but our car was buried.

December 17, 1970 - Lexington, MA

The car broke down a few miles from Chelsea Naval Hospital but, fortunately, we were
next to a gas station and the owner took us the rest of the way, in his truck, which had a
snow plow attached.  They gave me an epidural which slowed down my labor and you
didn't arrive till that evening.  Your grandmother flew up right away to spend a week with
us since she was en route to Thailand for six months because your grandfather was
stationed there.  She adored  you!

Newborn Shawn with Grandma Quinlan

You were only eight days old your first Christmas but Santa managed to find you and  you
were the best Christmas present I ever had!

Our collie, Snoopy, became your constant companion.  He slept beside your crib, lay
next to you if you were lying on the floor, and would follow whomever had you in their arms.

Your dad was a private pilot and a member of the base aeroclub so, when you were two
months old, we rented a Cessna and flew from Boston to New Orleans so our dear friend,
Father Gerard Poche, who had performed our wedding, could baptize you.  Auntie Meaux,
who had been my maid of honor, was also your godmother.  That trip began your love of
travel -I think I transferred that to you in utero!!

Here you are in Auntie Meaux's lap with Aunt Carol & Lara looking on.

One Saturday, we rented a Cessna 150 and flew up to Bar Harbor, Maine for a feast
of  steamed clams and lobster.  In fact, we had the same meal for both lunch and dinner.
Ed got this shot of you, sitting on top of the Cessna.  Though it's a little worn with time,
it's one of my favorite pictures of you!

Of course, we couldn't let you celebrate your first birthday, without a trip to my favorite
place in the world - San Francisco.  Your dad and I had flown from Boston to New
Orleans to get married, then we'd honeymooned in San Francisco.  So we took you
when you were about nine months old.  What a perfect day we had at the Golden
Gate Bridge!!

For your first birthday and your first haircut, we were visiting Grandma and Grandpa
Quinlan in Columbus, Georgia.

Your second and third Christmases, we were stationed in Tampa, Florida.  We had traded
snow for much warmer temperatures and we bought our first house!

You celebrated your fifth birthday in southern California, then the following year, your dad
stayed in the Fullerton house and I brought you to the San Francisco area to follow my dream.

For eleven years, you were an only child, jetting back and forth to visit your dad in
Fullerton and hanging out with your friends in the San Francisco area.  When I remarried
and brought a baby brother into the scene, you were terrific, even changing dirty diapers,
on occasion.

Two years later, when Jeremy arrived, you took it all in stride and got used to having two
toddlers following after you and your friend, Tim.  It gave him good practice for the two
children he now has.  You, still single, said you don't plan to marry and, if you do, you
don't plan to have children.  "I've already raised two!"  And that you did.  When I was
disabled for a year and a half following extensive back surgery and the father of the boys
left ( they were only one and three ), I couldn't have made it without you.

Shawn, Grandpa Quinlan, Alex & Jeremy

Your dad, Ed, and Lois, your "other mother", came up for your high school graduation.
Lois and I couldn't believe how closely you resembled your father, even to all your
little mannerisms.  The three of us, also, couldn't believe how long it was going to take
you to get your electrical engineering degree from San Jose State.  The next time we
gathered together for that occasion, you were 34-years-old.  Of course, you did do
some Air Force active duty time in there!

You got quite a workout with your brothers until they finally got taller than you ( they're
now 6'4" to your 5'10" - I think that's your height ) and both were football players - so,
eventually, you couldn't win the wrestling matches, not even against just one of them.
Face it, kiddo, you're getting old.

At 21, when you decided to go into the Air Force Reserves and left home for basic
training and then six months of tech school, there was a major sense of loss around
here.  It was very exciting, though, to go to San Antonio to see you graduate.  I can't
remember but you did so with honors and you were dorm chief or something like that -
and your drill Sgts. were WOMEN!  And you could fold your underwear into a two
inch square!

I just want to say how much I have enjoyed having you for a son.  We have shared
a home for a lot of years and you are very good company.  I appreciate all the ways
you've come through for me over the years ( I finally believe, after years of working
on the navigation systems for the C5 and C17 that you really can take my computer
apart and fix it ).  Our talks about travel, food and wine are a joy and you are more
than just a son, you are a friend.  I think you are also more than just a brother to
Alex and Jeremy, you are their friend and were there when their father wasn't.  I was
just so sorry that the Air Force sent you to Germany one week before Alex and
Laura's wedding.  You missed a great occasion and you should have been part of it.

Shawn, aka, George Clooney ( his Air Force boss calls him that! ) and his friend,
Dawn, at my 66th birthday celebration

Happy birthday, Shawn!  Take your milk thistle and enjoy many, many more birthdays..
I am very proud of you as I am sure Ed and Lois are, too.

Flash 55 Friday - Facing Death - December 10, 2010

Flash 55 Friday - Facing Death - December 10, 2010

Snow swirled around him. He was faint from hunger and

chilled to the bone. He was terribly lost and he knew he

couldn’t survive much longer. He began weeping, the tears

freezing on his cheeks. His life passed before him.

Wait, what’s this?

Suddenly, in front of him, loomed salvation –

brightly shining golden arches!

McDonald’s!
