Shadow Shot Sunday 2 - Vegetable Seller in Shadow at Indian Market - August 11, 2013

Here in Mumbai, in the height of monsoon season, one must act quickly to
find a sunny moment when shadows are cast.  Such was my luck, one
afternoon, when I was at the bazaar in search of vegetables for dinner.

Monsoon Rains Continue in Mumbai - July 26 2013

I'd like to see a sunny sky,
Instead of clouds of gray,
But, alas, it seems a futile wish,
More rains are on the way!

Monsoon is wreaking havoc,
Commuters face delay,
Air traffic is being rerouted,
Such is life in old Bombay.

The weather outlook for the coming week,
Continues rainy and very bleak!

Lifesavers - Friday Flash 55 - July 19, 2013

Though monsoon rains continue,
I'm in a better mood,
I've found a good martini,
And really top notch food.

I can feast on rare carpaccio,
When the urge possesses me,
Just the shortest rickshaw ride,
From the Arabian Sea.

There's nothing like an ocean view,
To cure whatever's ailing you!

Even in the pouring rain!

Our World Tuesday: Week 98 - Rain, Rain, Rain - July 9, 2013

Mumbai rains continue.  We have an occasional day with only a sprinkle but
some days, there are deluges.  I stay pretty close to home, venturing only to
local restaurants and avoiding rickshaw rides into the flooded streets and
chaotic traffic.  I love hearing the rains at night, though.

Of course, some folks have to get out and go to work or head to the street
vendors for groceries.  I don't envy them at all.  I will be glad when monsoon
season ends!

Our World Tuesday - Week 97 - Nighttime View of the Arabian Sea - July 2, 2013

Sometimes, in the torrential downpours of monsoon season, you can't even tell
what is outside my bedroom window in Bandra West.  How nice to get a break
in the rain to get this shot of nighttime south Mumbai and this bit of the
Arabian Sea.  Of course, as you can see from the sky, we had only a brief
reprieve from the downpours!

Friday Flash 55 - The Wet Set - 6-14-13

It isn't raining cats and dogs,
There are none in sight,
For Mumbai's monsoon rains are here,
And they are quite a fright!

Creating havoc in the streets,
The swirling waters rise,
As the deluge keeps on falling,
From the darkened, gloomy skies.

Safe inside, I love the sound,
Of raindrops pounding on the ground.

Thanks to One and All - Slowly But Surely, A Home Is Finalizing - Home, June 12, 2013

I cannot believe my stay at the J. K. Regency is now into its 8th day.  Two days
ago, the phone went out, supposedly because of the monsoon rains.  When
I want room service ( no restaurant here in which to eat but, somewhere in the
bowels of the hotel, someone cooks ), I have to call the front desk on my mobile!
I did my Trip Advisor review and I haven't really changed my opinion.  I would
never again stay here.

I've been out with two different brokers to see properties.  I specified, very
clearly, my needs...among them, ground floor, or a lift.  The man, with whom
I was out yesterday, took me to four places.  Three of them were on the 1st
floor.  I can manage one flight of stairs but, when we came to the last place
and it was on the 2nd floor, I was furious and told him to get out of the rickshaw
and I headed home.  Besides, every property was disgusting - filthy, holes in
the walls, trash on the floors.  I can't believe owners would show places like
that!

The day before, the father of Edsel Toscano, a dear friend from Royal Caribbean
cruising days, went with me to see some places in Bandra where he lives.  He
and I were both appalled at what we were shown, especially since Bandra is
quite an upscale area.  Yesterday, Norman called and said his wife had been
asking around and their neighbor had a friend with a room to rent.  He came all
the way from Bandra to go with me to see the place which was in the home of a
lovely lady named Norma, a 67-year-old widow with a very nice home in a good
location in Andheri West, one of the areas in which I was interested.  It is perfect
for me - bedroom with its own bath AND a separate entrance, use of the kitchen,
if I like, a washing machine and her company if I'm lonely.  We have much in
common and she was in the work force for many years and speaks perfect
English ( though I need to learn Hindi ).  The only hitch is that the place isn't
available till July 1.  Once again, the Toscanos to the rescue.  Their friend, who
lives next to them, offered a room in her place ( she is in Australia ) until the
first.  I don't know what the rent will be ( reasonable, I'm sure ) so I am out of this
hotel tomorrow.

I need to do something special for Edsel who is also in Australia with his lovely
wife, Gisela, and their sweet little boy - and for his parents.  I will so much enjoy
spending part of the next two + weeks visiting with Norman and Rosie.  I was
supposed to meet them last time I lived in Mumbai and I really regret that I
didn't.  Now I will make up for lost time, being right next door.  I can see now why
Edsel is the sweetheart he is!

So, thanks to all of you who cheered me on, prayed, encouraged and kept the
faith.  I was almost ready to give up.  I know this may well be my last time in India...
in spite of my ten year visa, I have to acknowledge I AM getting old!  I do hope to
visit my friends in Jaipur, Chandigarh, Delhi, Pune and Bangalore and to add a few
new places to the list.  I may be going by bus or train, though, since it is so much
more economical.

Road are in great disrepair and flood easily during the monsoon rains

Business goes on as usual

At least, his umbrella isn't inside out!

Sweet children, living on the roadside and trying to stay dry

A common sight in front of shops as people clean their drains in
an effort to prevent flooding

I don't know what this is called but it was great!

A Week in Mumbai, Filled With Frustrations and Deluges - 6-11-13

Well, my journey to India was as usual - long and exhausting.  It was my first time
to fly on Virgin Atlantic, the carrier I took as far as London.  For some reason, I
was upgraded to Premium Economy, a blessing, as the flight was completely
full.  At least, when the passenger in front of me reclined, I didn't have bruises
on my knees.  Ten hours after my San Francisco departure, we touched down
at Heathrow where I had a SEVEN hour layover.

I was wheeled to the transit area where people are taken to their connecting
terminals ( no such luck, of course, that I might be flying out of the same terminal ).
That was like Grand Central Station....uh, no, perhaps like Victoria Station.
Passengers of every ethnicity clamored to go to their respective gates but, as I
had seven hours, I told the agent to proceed, I was enjoying the entertainment.
Finally, I arrived, via bus, at the terminal to board my Jet Airways flight to Mumbai
for a nine hour journey.

It was my first time on an international jet airways flight.  The flight attendants were
beautiful, in their Indian-style uniforms, and very nice.  Of course, once again, the
flight was completely full...but uneventful.  When I arrived in Mumbai, my driver
from the Transit Hotel was there waiting, with a big smile ( I am well known to them
as it is my place to stay in Mumbai ).  The front desk clerk said they appreciated
my sending my photo along with the reservation so they knew I was coming.

Once at the hotel, I began responding to dozens of ads for "paying guests" -
roommate sharing.  I had specific requirements, though....wanted a single room
and no stairs.  Seventy calls later, I began contacting brokers, something I hadn't
wanted to do - as their fee is the cost of a month's rent.

After two nights at the Transit, at $100/night, I knew I needed to find a cheaper
hotel.  I needed to preserve my funds.  I transferred to the J. K. Regency.  An
amazing driver, Prabu, with a small taxi, managed to get ALL my bags into his
cab, no small feat.  I got his mobile number for future use.

The J. K. Regency did not look like its pictures.  I had read the Trip Advisor reviews
before booking and that should have kept me from choosing this hotel.  Awful barely
describes it.  Dirty, bell staff in uniforms that look as though they have never been
laundered, halls dark and filthy...but, at $35/day, I stayed.

My bedroom, with its rock hard bed, threadbare blanket

Soiled curtain but, amazingly, the air conditioner is superb

The hallway outside my room - this dirty mattress stayed there
for three days

My hallway by the elevator

Here is my review of the hotel on Trip Advisor.  I can't believe some people
actually rated this place three stars!

Outside the hotel, rain or shine, life goes on.  I am always astonished at the heavy loads
people carry on their heads - and in the midst of chaotic traffic!

Thankfully, this day was dry.  Otherwise, people are walking almost knee deep
in water.  As you can see, this woman has on no helmet - and she is riding
"pinion" ( side saddle ) in her sari.

I'm off shortly for another day of looking for a place to live.  Please everyone,
think good thoughts and say prayers that I meet with success soon.

Namaste from Mumbai.

Thursday Challenge: Weather - Jaipur Monsoon - May 23, 2013

Last year's monsoon season, in Jaipur, was minimal but I got some delightful
shots of Vishu, my landlady's grandson, playing in the rain.  I remember my delight,
as a child, in Columbus, Georgia, running in the rain showers, as long as there
were not tornado warnings out or streaks of chain lightning illuminating the sky.

Unique Weekend Photo Challenge: Rain - Monsoon in Jaipur - March 30, 2013

I thought this would be a good photograph for this week's photo challenge
of rain. I well remember that day of torrential downpour in Jaipur. Traffic was
at a standstill for a time, with the streets flooded and a momentary reprieve
from the soaring temperatures.

Life in Jaipur, Rajasthan, India - October 13, 2012

I have one more month left of my five month stay in Jaipur, the capital and largest
city of Rajasthan, India.  Jaipur is well known to tourists as part of the Golden
Triangle ( which includes Delhi and Agra - home of the Taj Mahal ).  It is often
called "The Pink City"  and "the Paris of India."  Maharajah Jai Singh II left Amber
Fort in 1727 and laid out the city.  The old city was painted pink in 1876 to welcome
the Prince of Wales who later became King Edward VII,  It continues pink to the
day.

Jaipur is a city of beautiful palaces, temples, Rajasthani and Moghul architecture.
It has five star hotels, budget properties,  guest houses, autorickshaws, elephants, camel carts, cows roaming loose in the streets, a great variety of restaurants, centers of
higher education, bazaars, festivals. monkeys here and there, and beautiful fabrics
and jewelry stores.

I have loved my time here except for the blistering summer heat and the distance from

any ocean.  Having spent the last thirty-five years with the Pacific Ocean at my
feet, I've had trouble adjusting to the desert climate.  Even monsoon season failed
to provide adequate rainfall.

Here are some pictures I've taken of my temporary home, Jaipur.

Out grocery shopping.  People carry amazing weights on their heads!

The beautiful Hawa Mahal, or Palace of the Winds, built by by Maharaja Sawaj Pratap
Singh in 1799.  This five story building allowed the ladies of the royal family to
observe their city without being seen.

Kathputli wood puppets of Rajasthan - an art tradition believed to be over a
tousand years old.

The bicycle rickshaw - one of many forms of transportation

Pepper and lemon talsiman are used to bring good luck - this hangs from a car bumper.
