The Saturday Photo Hunt - Gray - September 7, 2014

While it is already Sunday here in India, it still before midnight in San Francisco so
I will hurriedly add my "gray" post for this meme.  Mumbai rains certainly make for
gray skies which are so appropriate for this post.  Sometimes I can barely see out
my window across the Arabian Sea to the tall buildings on the other side!!!

Water World Wednesday, Episode 76, Year 1 - Sea and Sky - September 25, 2013

For most of my childhood and adolescence, I didn't live near an ocean - though summer vacations would often find us on the Gulf of Mexico at Panama City, Destin, and
Pensacola, Florida.  I grew up, literally, on the banks of the Chattahoochee River,
separating Georgia from Alabama in my birthplace of Columbus, Georgia.  Then,
I went away to nursing school at Charity Hospital in New Orleans, with another river
making its presence known - the mighty Mississippi.

I have always loved the ocean, though, and, from time to time, I would visit Miami
and see the Atlantic.  My move to Boston gave me proximity to the New England
Atlantic coast.  I headed west and found my home on the Pacific, sometimes only
a couple of miles walking distance from my house.  I visited Hawaii and, then,
began cruising, seeing most of the major oceans and seas of the world.  Now,
during my six months in India, I look out my bedroom window and see the
Arabian Sea.

Long ago, I wrote about about the sea:

The Sea

The sea has many faces,
And many different moods,
From violent raging tempests,
To lucid interludes.

It flows past frozen glaciers,
And laps on palm lined shores,
It touches the Antarctic,
And the Portuguese Azores.

In the depths beneath its surface,
Such beauty you can find,
Abundant wealth and bounty,
Sustenance for all mankind.

It shapes the land adjacent,
Taking years to leave its mark,
Sometimes gentle hills remain,
Or landscapes steep and stark.

The sound of the sea relaxes,
And it casts a magic spell,
It lulls and lures and soothes,
With each rolling, gentle swell.

With a vengeance, it can change,
And wreak destruction in its path,
As if Poseidon, angered,
Lets loose his fearful wrath!

Weekend Reflections - Building Reflections in the Arabian Sea - September 8, 2013

At last, Mumbai's monsoon rains have almost disappeared.  What we have now is
only an occasional light shower.  Sun shines most days and, in the early evening,
I caught the reflections of these buildings .  The Arabian Sea is the view I see
from the 7th floor bedroom where I am staying in Bandra West, a Mumbai
suburb and I am always checking  the daily changes in the scenery.

Lifesavers - Friday Flash 55 - July 19, 2013

Though monsoon rains continue,
I'm in a better mood,
I've found a good martini,
And really top notch food.

I can feast on rare carpaccio,
When the urge possesses me,
Just the shortest rickshaw ride,
From the Arabian Sea.

There's nothing like an ocean view,
To cure whatever's ailing you!

Even in the pouring rain!

Our World Tuesday - Week 97 - Nighttime View of the Arabian Sea - July 2, 2013

Sometimes, in the torrential downpours of monsoon season, you can't even tell
what is outside my bedroom window in Bandra West.  How nice to get a break
in the rain to get this shot of nighttime south Mumbai and this bit of the
Arabian Sea.  Of course, as you can see from the sky, we had only a brief
reprieve from the downpours!

Camera Critters #272 - Kites ( Milvus migrans govinda ) of Bandra - June 22, 2013

The friends with whom I'm currently residing are in a 7th floor apartment that looks
out on the Arabian Sea.  Birds soar about, dive bombing, and squawking,
especially during daytime hours.  They are, primarily, crows and black kites
( Milvus vigrans govinda or common pariah kite ).  These birds prefer to be near
human habitation and are a little smaller than vultures.  They normally eat small
birds, mice, lizards, termites.

Rosy helps them out a bit by throwing out small pieces of raw chicken which they
swoop by and grab.  It is amazing to see.  The crows get pieces of bread and
actually approach the window to take it from her hand.
