Alphabe Thursday - "C" is for Carmen ( Miranda, That Is ) - October 7, 2010

Alphabe Thursday - "C" is for Carmen ( Miranda, That Is ) - October 7, 2010

Back in Columbus, Georgia, when my mother was in the late stages of her pregnancy
with me, Carmen Miranda was one of her favorite actresses. singers and dancers.
I remember listening to records of her and even went with my mother to see several
of her films.  As a little girl, I would play dress up and tie a basket of fruit on my head
and try to dance to her samba tunes, quite unsuccessfully, as apples and bananas
would go rolling all over the floor.

Carmen Miranda, was born in Portugal in 1909 and moved to Brazil with her mother
and sister in 1910, joining her father who had imigrated earlier.  Baptized Maria, her
father called her "Carmen", after his favorite opera.  She loved singing and dancing
from her early years but her father did not want her in show business.  Franklin D.
Roosevelt present her at a White House banquet and she went on to star in thirteen
Hollywood films.

According to Wikipedia, "By 1946 she was Hollywood's highest-paid entertainer and top female tax payer in the United States,[3] earning more than $200,000 that year, according to IRS records."

Her marriage, in 1947, to American film producer, David Sebastian, lasted only a few
months but his alcoholism precipated her heavy drinking. Sje ultimately became an
amphetamine and barbiturate abuser.

She died, far too young, at the age of 46, having suffered a heart attack during an
evening performance.

Carmen Miranda is buried in Rio de Janeiro.  She has a star on the Hollywood Walk of
Fame and there is a Carmen Miranda Square in Hollywood, near Grauman's Chinese
Theatre.  She was, apparently, beloved by a great number of people.

My Blogaversary Winner!! October 6, 2010

My Blogaversary Winner!! -  October 6, 2010

I apologize to everyone for not announcing the winner the day following my birthday.
As you know, I had so many good things happening that I got behind on tallying all the
comments and taking care of business.  There were 275 eligible commenters in the
drawing ( you had to be a follower of my blog to be included ). I did not do the random
thing...I am just not that competent.  What I did took a lot longer, I'm afraid.  I printed
each day's commenters on a list, then cut up the entries, then folded them and put them
in a huge sealed plastic container.  When I went out to get gas today, I asked the
attendant to draw one name ( I am sure he questioned my sanity ).  The winner of the
"big three" is Kay L. Davis.  She is a Canadian whose blog you may follow -
"an unfittie's guide to adventurous travel!"  Check it out! I'll be sending Kay the following -

Fifty Dollars

The most recent CD of my favorite jazz singer, Sony Holland

A copy of my poetry book

After I got home today, I had a friend pull two more names for a copy of "Life's Journey,"
my poetry book.  The winners are rainfield61 whose blog, "My Journey" is at http://rainfield61.blogspot.com/ and clean and crazy whose blog, "My Recovery," is at
http://surrendertowin.blogspot.com/.  Check them both out - they are wonderful.

Thanks to everyone who participated in my blogaversary giveaway and who posted
during this time period,  I appreciate all of you who have become followers in the past
year and who have crossed my path at some time or other.  In the 20 months since my
job ended, you all have been a life line for me and have given so much to me.  I hope
I'll still be here with you next year at this time!!

Magpie #34. The Light Within, October 5, 2010

Magpie #34, The Light Within, October 5, 2010

The cabin seemed so very small,
High on the mountain slopes,
Yet it held a growing family,
Filled with dreams and hopes.

The mother woke at dawn's first light,
And sent them on their way,
With a breakfast that would last them,
Through their very long school day.

In the solitude, she tidied up,
Mended clothes and swept the floors,
Pulled weeds out of the garden,
And finished up some other chores.

She went down to her husband's grave,
And lay sweet roses there,
And, once again, asked the Lord,
How his death was really fair.

He'd always been the kindest man,
Who helped all those in need,
And thus he went one rainy night,
To do a neighborly deed.

His horse slipped on the footpath,
On the rainsoaked mountain trail,
And all efforts made to save his life,
Were to no avail.

With the oil lamp lit, she waited,
All the long night through,
While the children slept, oblivious,
Her terror slowly grew.

The preacher came before the dawn,
And saw the soft light glow inside,
And broke the news to this dear lass,
That her beloved husband died.

Mellow Yellow Monday - A Great Birthday - October 4, 2010

Mellow Yellow Monday - A Great Birthday - October 4, 2010

There were only subtle bits of yellow for my birthday yesterday, slices of lemon at  a
meal, fans in the decor at Esperpento Restaurant, or other bits of yellow here and
there but I'm going to put my post in Mellow Yellow anyway.

It was a great day from start to finish.  I began it at the Hyatt Regency in Burlingame,
CA, listening to the fabulous Margie Baker sing jazz, blues, and music from the Great
American Songbook.  I didn't get a picture of her this time ( she hates having her picture
taken ) but the other musicians obliged!  Keithe was terrific on keyboard and Ken did
his usual great job on bass.  Royal delights on drums and he is so sweet!

I love this banner at the Sweetwater Cafe where the Hyatt  has their jazz brunch every
Sunday and where Margie Baker performs.  There is a hint of yellow in the leaves.

For dinner, my family took me to San Francisco's Mission district to eat at a wonderful
Spanish restaurant, Esperpento.  The only one missing was my middle son, Alex, who
stayed in West Sacramento to study for a big calculus test tomorrow!  His wife, Laura,
who had run in a half marathon in the morning in San Jose, stayed in the area, to join
us for dinner which was so nice, even though she was bone weary and was suffering
from a bum knee ( no matter what, she is always beautiful! ).

The food was fabulous at Esperpento and we had such a wonderful time in thiscrowded,
noisy Mission restaurant.

We had to wait for Shawn and his friend, Dawn,  to arrive from Fairfield since he had
Air Force Reserves this weekend.  Of course, we put the time to good use with
appetizers. They were yummy - fried calamari, wonderful spicy potatoes, and
grilled artichokes.

Once Dawn and Shawn arrived, we ordered three of their grilled specialities, a seafood
platter, a vegetable platter, and their grilled meats - fabulous, all of them.

Time for a food shot - here's the grilled seafood!

Me with our family's only girl, my lovely daugher-in-law, Laura
( she looks like this after running a half marathon! )

My son, Jeremy, and his lovely girlfriend, Katie
( don't my sons choose beautiful girls! )

Jeremy will be 26 November 2nd and he HATES having
blog photos taken

This cake was such a wonderful surprise.  Those of you who know me well are aware of
my addiction to marzipan.  Katie went home to San Diego last week and brought this
cake back from there.  How she managed it on the flight - and got it home and to the
restaurant without my knowledge is beyond m!  I was so surprised when it came out
after the meal.  It was so delicious and was the most wonderful finale to a wonderful
birthday.  If you have to be sixty-six and you can't be in Rome, sharing a birthday with
the best sons and their lovely ladies and a marzipan cake is definitely the way to go!

Thank you, children, for this day - and for my plane ticket to my 45 year
nursing school reunion in New Orleans and for my Droid 2 phone ( I am
definitely keep up with the hip grannies - except I'm not a grannie yet ).

Bits and Pieces, Sunday, October 3, 2010

Bits and Pieces, Sunday, October 3, 2010

It is well after midnight and here I sit at my computer in Daly City, California, thinking
longingly of this date, for the past two years, when I was snuggling in my bed at the
Hotel Napoleon in Rome, Italy.  I will have to get off an email shortly to Roberto Cioce,
the general manager so he doesn't forget me.  He and his staff made my stays there
truly memorable and the most delightful hotel visits of my life.

My birthday flowers from Roberto Cioce of the Hotel Napoleon, Rome, Oct 3, 2008

My 40th birthday, I was in Paris, France.  That wasn't the best trip of my life but I won't
go into those details here.  Suffice it to say, I would have been much better off if I had
made that trip alone instead of with the traveling companion I had.  It was a most
unpleasant week as we visited Paris, then made our way down the Atlantic coast,
across southern France, and back up through the western part of France to Paris again.

For my 55th birthday, I was on a Mediterranean cruise with my beloved friend, Brenda
Garison, and saw Venice for the first time..  We dined with the charming Captain
Ronson the night before I turned 55 and he invited us to the bridge to sail down
the Grand Canal into Venice the following morning. What a special birthday gift that
was!  A few days later, we were on the magical Greek island of Santorini where I
rode this poor donkey up the steep cliff for a wonderul meal and views of a sparkling
blue sea below us.

Climbing up the hillside in Santorini, Greece

My friend, Sherry Arndt and I did a cruise from Ensenada, Mexico to Honolulu, Hawaii
in mid September 2007 so I was able to celebrate a very special aloha birthday with
Warren Fukushima, my friend of almost forty-six years.

At the Hilton Hawaiian Village in Honolulu with Warren Fukushima

Last year, four friends ( two from California, one from Texas and one from Florida ) went
with me to celebrate my birthday in Rome and to do a six day Mediterranean cruise with
an overnight stop at the end in Malaga, Spain and four nights in Barcelona before flying
home.  Since that time, I've pretty much stayed close to Daly City.

Cheers from the Piazza Navonna in Rome

So, no travels for me this year - but I did get a trip to New Orleans for my 45th nursing
school reunion which will take place October 15 - 17.  I'll stay for five days which will
give me a little time to visit with classmates who live in the area and to eat some
wonderful Creole cuisine.  That's one terrific birthday present.  Also, this morning,
my youngest son, Jeremy, and his lovely, Katie, took me to Verizon and gave me
a new Droid 2 for my birthday.  I have been playing with it all day and, maybe, just
maybe, by the time my next birthday rolls around, I may have mastered all the exciting
and fun things this new phone can do.

I want to thank Ann of Retired and Crazy, a lovely woman, across the "pond" in England
for giving me this Versatile Blogger Award.  Ann's husband, Davy, died earlier this year
after a long illness but she continued to write and endeared all of us to her with her wit,
stoicism and stamina against the "system" while continuing to care for the man she loved
in the last days of his life.

I'm to tell you eight things about me that are not generally known which may be a bit hard
since I did this for another post earlier this year.  I looked for it but, thus far, haven't located
it so, forgive me, if there is repitition.

1 - My brother was born in Salzburg, Austria.  We lived there from the time I was three,
until I was six-years-old.  My dad was an Army Infantry Lt. after the war.

2 -  I was named after Carmen Miranda.  My mother loved that Portuguese-born
Brazilian singer, dancer, and Hollywood film star popular in the 1940s and 1950s.

3 -  In my high school's powder puff football game, my senior year, I played left tackle.  I
was tall and skinny and my nickname was "lanky."

4 -  I don't like sea urchin.  I've tried eating it several times but it still doesn't appeal to me.

5 - I just discovered the t.v. series, "Dexter" and I am an addict.  We don't get Showtime
but I stayed up two nights in a row for twelve hours watching the first two seasons
"live"  on Netflix, then ordered the next two seasons on disk.  I am almost tempted
to get Showtime so I can watch season 5!  If you live near me and get Showtime,
can I come over to your house and watch it with you?

6 - I love raw oysters.  I can finish off several dozen by myself, with a sauce of catsup,
lemon juice and horseradish.  I am so hoping that the oysters weren't damaged
by the leaking BP oil so that I can enjoy them during my visit to New Orleans.

7. - I am not a good swimmer.  As much as I like cruising, I prefer swimming in a pool
to ocean swimming, because I don't swim well against waves, current, etc.  Also,
I don't  like creepy, crawly things around my legs and body.

8 -  I have never had a moving violation for speeding, running a red light or anything
      of that kind.

My next challenge is to pass this award on to 8 other worthy bloggers. I do realize
that, very often, people do not wish to participate in this type of activity so please
speak up.  After much thought I have selected the following:

It may take me a day or two to get all the comments tallied and to have the drawing for
my blogaversary giveaway.  I want to thank everyone for participating!  I will contact you
with the winner's name as I will need a mailing address.

Camera Critters - Pets of English Friends - October 2, 2010

Camera Critters - Pets of English Friends - October 2, 2010

These are photos, taken six years ago, during a visit to my dear friends, Steve and
Jenny Clark, who have a wonderful 15th century farm house in Rye.  We met when we
were tablemates on a southeast Asian cruise in 1997 and those twelve days just flew
by.  Over the past thirteen years, they've been to San Francisco twice, I've been to
England at least four times and we've met up twice in Barcelona.  They've always had
Great Danes and an assortment of other "critters".  I just came across these pictures
and thought they'd be perfect for today's blog.

Oh, yes, to answer today's Camera Critter question, I just celebrated my first blog
anniversary in September!!

Flash 55 Friday - Another Year Older and Deeper in Debt - October 1, 2010

Flash 55 Friday - Another Year Older and Deeper in Debt - October 1, 2010

I'm looking at the wrinkle creams,
And frowning at their price,
Those within my budget,
Really promise nothing nice.

My hair is turning grayer,
And I've gained a pound or two,
But Sunday I'll be sixty-six,
So what's a girl to do?

I think I'll have a cheer,
I made it through another year!
