Orange You Glad It's Friday, Week 114 - October 30, 2014

First of all, I must congratulate my home team San
Francisco Giants on their great World Series win.
It was a knuckle biting seven games and, though I
didn't actually watch them from India, I followed, almost
play by play, on internet news.

I offered prayers to almost every deity, including Lord
Ganesha, the Indian god, known as the overcomer of
obstacles.  To whichever god ( or all of them ) that
helped my team win, thank you!!  Our city rejoices.

My "orange you glad Friday" post is of a sweet Lord
Ganesha I found at Creative Textiles in Jaipur, a store
that had wonderful fabrics and made lovely clothes
from them.  I came home with two outfits and this
little Ganesha.  I now have a small collection of Ganeshas.

Mellow Yellow Monday #197 - Bright Yellow Bananas - October 29, 2012

All over Jaiper, street vendor carts have all sorts of wonderful things for sale -
from brightly colored fruits, old familiar favorites to exotic kinds like the custard
apple ( also known as the bullock's heart or Buddha fruit ), guava, and star fruit.
Vegetable carts are piled high with various chilis from mild to fiery hot, luscious
tomatoes, little round eggplants diifferent from those at home, okra or bindi as
it's known in Hindi, and many types of squashes and salad items,  In town,
vendors spread their wares out on the busy road side, sitting next to each other
on the ground so they can pass the hours, chatting, when no customers
are around.

Congratulations are in order to the outstanding

I never could see a game here in Jaipur, Rajasthan, India but, thanks to Yahoo Sports, I could follow them all, play by play and it was still pretty exciting.  I won't get home till the
16th of November, after a five month stay here, but, rest assured, I will be toasting my
home team tonight with my Indian friends who are much more into cricket than baseball.
They are sweet to humor my enthusiasm, though.

Friday Flash 55 - Orange October - October 26, 2012

While I really do love India,
 I cannot seem to find,
One game of Giant's baseball,
And I'm about to lose my mind.

Even ESPN has failed me,
No games live or on the news,
Even if they were Hindi,
I wouldn't have the blues.

3 weeks - I'm coming back...
Another series, Orange & Black!

Sundays in My City - Rufus Wainwright - November 14, 2010

Sundays in My City - Rufus Wainwright - November 14, 2010

I had had a rough week, getting sick the last day of October, being admitted to the
hospital on November 5th and staying at Seton Medical Center until the afternoon
of November 9th.  I had been invited to attend the Rufus Wainright concert at
Davies Symphony Hall on Friday, November 12th, along with my friend, Jo.  Though
I still was 100%, with my ankles and feet about the size of Dumbo's, I wasn't going to
miss such an occasion.  Rufus Wainright, a 37-year-old Canadian American singer
songwriter, was performing five Shakespearean sonnets as the solo vocalist, with
music he had written, accompanied by the San Francisco Symphony.  I knew him
best as the composer of "Sanssouci", a beautiful song which is the title album of a
dear friend and fabulous jazz singer, Sony Holland ( http://www.sonyholland.com/ ).  Our
seats were in the orchestra, only a few rows from the stage and, following his
performance, Rufus met for a question and answer session.  He is quite pleasant
and charming and multi-talented.

Following the concert, we stopped by a famous San Francisco eatery, Tommy's Joint.
I am on a very restricted diet for thirty days so I had to settle for a ham sandwich with
no condiments though I certainly looked longingly at all the other offerings.

With performances taking place both at Davies Symphony Hall and other venues in the
area, we had to park nearly three blocks away.  It was beautiful, though, seeing city hall
all lit up, complete with the tributes to the San Francisco Giants and their World Series
victory!

San Francisco City Hall

San Francisco's City Hall reopened in 1915, after being completely deystroyed in the
1906 earthquake.  It occupies two full city blocks and has the fifth largest dome in the
world, rising higher than that of the nation's capitol ( info from Wikipedia ).  Mayor
George Moscone and Supervisor Harvey Milk were assasinated here November 27,
1978.

One of the three faces

In May of 2010, in honor of the sister city status between Shanghai, China and San
Francisco, famous Chinese artist, Zhang Huan, created a huge statue which was placed
in the Joseph L. Alioto Performing  Arts Piazza, across the street from City Hall.

Alphabe-Thursday - "F" is for Fabulous & Fantastic - October 28, 2010

Alphabe-Thursday - "F" is for Fabulous & Fantastic - October 28, 2010

Fabulous and fantastic pretty much describe our San Francisco Giants!  Needless to
say, this city by the bay celebrated big time last night as its baseball team won Game 1
of the world series.  I've never been a great baseball fan myself but, regardless, I always
support my home team and, like so many others, I sat glued to the t.v. set to watch the
opening game against the Texas Rangers.  I can just imagine how exciting it must have
been to be among the crowds at AT & T Park at Willie Mays Plaza!  Of course, there is
something to be said for being with your family at home, enjoying a dinner of Country
Captain ( an Indian chicken curry dish ) and Carmen's Caribbean Cocktails and not
having to wait in traffic to get home after the game.

Our Giants did the fans proud and we are hoping for another win tonight.  We'll be right
there cheering you on.
