Mellow Yellow Monday #199- A Last Burros and a Bus

I saved my last burro picture because it was so perfect for Mellow Yellow 

Monday,crossing in front of that bright yellow bus.  I thought it interesting that,

while the group of six of them had some sort of collars around their necks,

they were walking unattended in the streets, staying with each other, but

no human seemed to be in sight, in attendance.  My friend, Ajay, manager

of the Umaid Mahal Hotel, tells me there are hundreds of burros in Jaipur.  I

just haven't seen them.

Mellow Yellow Monday #197 - Bright Yellow Bananas - October 29, 2012

All over Jaiper, street vendor carts have all sorts of wonderful things for sale -
from brightly colored fruits, old familiar favorites to exotic kinds like the custard
apple ( also known as the bullock's heart or Buddha fruit ), guava, and star fruit.
Vegetable carts are piled high with various chilis from mild to fiery hot, luscious
tomatoes, little round eggplants diifferent from those at home, okra or bindi as 
it's known in Hindi, and many types of squashes and salad items,  In town, 
vendors spread their wares out on the busy road side, sitting next to each other
on the ground so they can pass the hours, chatting, when no customers 
are around.

I never could see a game here in Jaipur, Rajasthan, India but, thanks to Yahoo Sports, I could follow them all, play by play and it was still pretty exciting.  I won't get home till the

16th of November, after a five month stay here, but, rest assured, I will be toasting my

home team tonight with my Indian friends who are much more into cricket than baseball.

They are sweet to humor my enthusiasm, though.

Mellow Yellow Monday #196 - An Indian Lady - October 22, 2012

When I was visiting Dr. Galundia in Jaipur the other day, this lovely lady came in,
wearing a pink and yellow sari.  I asked if I might take her photograph and she
agreed.  I thought it was perfect for Mellow Yellow Monday and she gave me her
permission to use it.  She had such a sweet face - though she might  not have
been feeling well.

Orange & Yellow Flower, Drowning in Monsoon Rain - September 17, 2012

In our torrential downpour last week, this cheery blossom took quite a beating
from the relentless rain.  It remained standing, however.  I'm not sure what it
is - iris, maybe.

Mellow Yellow Monday #189 - Yellow Flowers in Jaipur Monsoons

We are finally having monsoon rainfall in Jaipur - sometimes, the drops hit the
ground with such a vengeance, it's a wonder anything is left standing.

These pretty little yellow flowers ( don't know their name ), in front of my room,
have survived quite well

Mellow Yellow Monday #186 - Yellow Swan - August 13, 2013

Though it is definitely below its usual water level because of the deficiency
in rainfall from this year's monsoons, Chandigarh's Lake Sukhna, at the
foothills of the Himalayas, is a delight for young and old alike.  Yesterday,
paddleboats were out until after sunset.  One of my favorites was this
yellow swan.

Mellow Yellow Monday #174 - Yellow and Purple Beauty - May 21, 2012

I have always loved the combination of yellow and purple - my favorite floral bouquets
are yellow roses and purple irises and, though, I have hinted VERY often, they don't
seem to come my way on a frequent basis.  I guess, partly because, folks also know
that I enjoy a bottle of good wine.  Now, the ultimate gift to me would be a nice wine
AND a bouquet of yellow roses and purple irises.

My lovely daughter-in-law had arranged this simple, but beautiful, bouquet in her home
when I visited last weekend for Mother's Day.  I delighted in it the whole three days I
was there.

Mellow Yellow Monday #171 - Bangalore House - April 30, 2012

Across the street from the lovely home in Bangalore ( Bengaluru );
Karnataka, India, where I spent six days, I could see a beautiful
sunrise every morning ( if I opened my eyes that early ), a vacant
lot of castor trees, and this yellow house, among other things.

Mellow Yellow Monday #166 - On the Road to New Delhi - March 26, 2012

There was so much to see in the blur as our taxi driver flew down the road
between Patiala and New Delhi.  These women, in their colorful saris, caught
my attention.

The saris worn by women in different  parts of India are quite different 

from each other.  I have not purchased any.  Watching my "sister", Lorna,

wrap one has convinced me that I would come unraveled and be,

embarrassingly, on display.  The saris are are so beautiful, though, I

am always in awe.

Mellow Yellow Monday #163 - Beautiful Yellow Flowering Tree - March 5, 2012

I am still in Bangalore, Karnataka, India - my fifth day with a dear blogging
friend and his family who have made my stay in India's "Silicon Valley" such a
wonderful experience.  I have been delighted with the beautiful flowers in this
garden city of India, especially with one spectacular yellow flowering tree.
I still do not know its name - my slow internet has not allowed me to easily
access the excellent "Flowers of India" website so, perhaps, one of my
followers might be able to tell me what this tree is.

It is blooming in great profusion right now and I love the brilliant yellow
flowers.  These pictures were taken on the grounds of St. Philomena's
Church in Mysore.

Mellow Yellow Monday #161 - Jal Mahal, Jaipur, Rajasthan, India - Feb 20, 2012

I loved my eight days in Jaipur.  There were so many beautiful things
to see in this lovely part of India.  One that I thrilled at passing on my
frequent journeys about Jaipur was the splendid Jal Mahal or "water
palace" in the Man Sagar Lake.

This exquisite architecture is a combination of the Rajput and Mughal styles
that are frequent in the state of Rajasthan.  When the lake is full, only one
floor remains above water.  In the 18th century, Maharajah Jai Sing II
of Amber began restoration and englargement of the palace and lake.

Because of years of pollution, the lake which had once been home to
150 species of migratory birds, no longer attracted visits by beast or
fowl.  Work was done to rectify this and birds are returning in large
numbers to the ir former habitats.

At one time, tours were allowed to visit the Jal Mahal but have now
ceased as restoration efforts continue.

Mellow Yellow Monday #156 - Mumbai Auto Rickshaws - January 16, 2012

According to Wikipedia, "An auto rickshaw is generally characterized 

by a sheet-metal body or open frame resting on three wheels, a canvas 

roof with drop-down sides, a small cabin in the front of the vehicle for the 

driver (sometimes called an auto-wallah), and seating space for up to

 three passengers in the rear. Newer models are generally fitted with 

an CNG-fueled scooter version of a 200cc four-stroke engine, with 

handlebar controls instead of a steering wheel".

They are used as a means of transportation in many parts of the world  

My experiences, especially in Thailand and India, have been a bit 

terrifying because of the overwhelming traffic.  In Mumbai, these 

open sided vehicles vie with other auto rickshaws - and motorcyles, 

buses, and cars for road space, often merging from several lanes 

into one and are  literally, inches apart from the next one. Horns 

blare and tempers flare and I just hold on for dear life, grasping

my purse and whatever belongings I have with me ( with the open 

sides, anyone can reach in and snatch my purse from the death grip 

of my hands ).  Somehow, I must be getting used to the adventure, 

however, because I find I can actually glance at the newspaper now, 

when on my merry way and, if it isn't rush hour when I wish I had on a 

motorcycle helmet and leather from head to toe, I might even finish 

an article!!

Mellow Yellow Monday #151 - Indian Golden Oriole - December 12, 2011

About 7AM every day, I've had the most wonderful treat.  An Indian golden

oriole - not always the same one because there have been different sizes -

comes to our kitchen windows and stays for some time, allowing me ample

photo opportunity.  They are so amusing.  Clearly, they cannot see us through

the glass because I get close enough to put my hand up to them.  They peck

madly at their reflections in the window.  I will talk softly to them and they

turn their heads, as if listening to my voice.  I am totally mesmerized!  All too

soon, the cawing of the crows sends them off for another day.

The Indian golden oriole ( oriolus kundoo ), once thought to be a subspecies

of the Eurasian golden oriole, has now been elevated to its own species.  The

adult male is distinct from that species because of the black stripe on its eye.

It inhabits a large range of habitats. The Indian golden oriole is  migratory in 

some areas though many remain in India.

A bird banded in one area of India was found in another area nine years later!

The female bird lays two to three eggs but parenting responsibilities are shared

by both mother and father!!  Very nice.
