Monday Mellow Yellows - Schubert Bakery, San Francisco, CA - February 21, 2016

I came across this photo, taken four years ago, when Warren Fukushima, my friend of over fifty years, left the warmth of Hawaii, to visit me in San Francisco.  We stopped for coffee and a sweet treat at Schubert's Bakery on Clement Street.

What a spectacular place that was!  I had the hardest time
deciding what to eat.  I've often thought of returning but, thus far, I've managed to resist the temptation.

The bakery case was filled with so many yellow confections, perfect for Monday Mellow Yellows!

Colorful Puppets of Jaipur - October 22, 2013

Depending on whether you are in India or San Francisco,
I have 42 or or 43 days left in Mumbai - it's 12-1/2 hrs earlier at home!

One of the things I love most about this "country of my heart, is the brilliant colors
everywhere, in clothing, home decor, puppets and, of course, cosmetics.  When
I finally win the lottery, I will return, oblivious of overweight luggage charges, to
outfit my new homes with all sorts of wonderful Indian purchases, in brilliant
colors, to offset gloomy rains and to fill my days with happiness and wonderful
memories of visits to this land I love so much.

Beautiful & Colorful Saris - October 7, 2013

It always seems to me that Indian women are dressed up when clad in their saris.  Even
for every day wear, they look so elegant.  I spotted this entourage last year when I was
in Jaipur.  Wish I could have gotten a bit closer for some better shots.

Monday Mellow Yellows and Orange You Glad It's Monday - Bright Yellow Sari and Bangles - September 30, 2013

Well, October 3rd is my 69th birthday and the beginning of my final two months
in India.  Four months have gone by in a flash.  It seems fitting that my post
for today is of a lovely friend, clad in a gorgeous yellow sari, wearing bangles
and lovely jewelry and with hennaed hands.  The occasion was a special
Hindu holiday, Karva Chauth, when married women fast from sunrise to
moonrise for the safety and longevity of their husbands.  And, no, there is
no corresponding holiday when men fast for the safety and longevity of
their wives!!!

Venice Ambulance - September 16, 2013

I love Venice and have been fortunate enough to overnight there twice, on a Royal
Caribbean ship.  I'm running out of years but I had so hoped to spend a week
in Venice so I really could explore.  One sees everything on the water there and I
found this ambulance very unique.  I think I wouldn't want to have to be loaded
into one, though.  Rolling waves have to make that task a bit harder than on dry
land.

The colorful ambulanzia has orange, yellow, and even
a little blue so I am posting it on three Monday memes:

Happy Ganesha Chaturthi! September 9, 2013

Today is very special for India and Hindus world wide - the birthday of Ganesha,
the elephant-headed god, born to Lord Shiva and the goddess, Parvati.  Children
have a school holiday ( it seems Indian children frequently have a day off as
schools are always closed for the major holidays of all religions! )..
celebrations of all religions!

According to Hindu  belief, Lord Ganesha was created by his mother, Parvati,
the consort of Lord Shiva.  She used sandalwood paste and gave him the
breath of life.  Ganesha was then put to stand guard while his mother bathed.
When Lord Shiva returned, Ganesha denied him entrance.  Lord Shiva, in a
fury, severed Ganesha's head.  Parvati was inconsolable.  Shiva sent out
his soldiers to bring him a head from a sleeping being.  That being was an
elephant.  The elephant head was placed on Ganesha's body and Lord Shiva
restored him to life.  He was appointed the head of Shiva's troops and Shiva
declared that Ganesha would be worshipped and, for success with any business
venture, his name would be invoked.

For more knowledge of this favorite of Hindu gods, check out some of the
attached links.  There are explanations for his broken tusk and his choice of
a mouse as his steed.

As Ganesha is often invoked at the start of any travel, my small gold Ganesha,
given to me by my good friends, Shiju and Manju Sugunan, resides in my passport
wallet.  I am not Hindu but I have no problem with asking Ganesha to keep me
safe on my journeys, near and far.  I invoke all the gods with that request!

Ganesha Chaturthi is celebrated, with much fan fare, from one to eleven days in
the Hindu world.  Nearly every home and business has a statue of Ganesha.
Traditionally, on the last day of the Ganesha festival, statues of Ganesha, which
originally were made from clay, are returned to the earth by being submerged into
the sea, a lake, or a body of water.  In recent times, this has posed an environmental
hazard as more modern Ganeshas are not made of clay and their paints may
contain harmful components such as mercury.

Song and dance and special sweets ( ladoo ) are also part of most Ganesha
celebrations.

On this Ganesh Charturthi, I wish the best for everyone - regardless of your
faith.  May you be wise, prosperous and have good fortune, overcome all
obstacles and travel in joy and good health.

Monday Mellow Yellows - Young Boy at Jaipur Bazaar - September 4, 2013

When this young man saw me taking pictures at his mother's bazaar stall, he
immediately ran down and asked if I wanted his photograph.  When I said I
would love to have it, he held out his hand for a monetary donation.  He was so
cute, I gave him fifty rupees.

Woman in Jaipur Bazaar - August 27, 2013

India's bazaars are always so full of color, from the produce and fruits sold to the lovely
ladies in saris, buying or selling.  This was taken in the wonderful city of Jaipur in
Rajasthan where I lived five months last year.  I just returned from a wonderful five
days there, renewing friendships and enjoying "the Pink City".

Monday Mellow Yellows - Bright Yellow Foliage - July 1, 2013

When I went to see Dr. Margaret Miranda in Mumbai the other day, I was
offered many photo opportunities.  Her office was in the midst of a lush tropical
garden with birds and flowers.  I found my Monday Mellow Yellow shot there but
I am not sure what the plant is but it grew in profusion.

Monday Mellow Yellows - Yellow San Francisco Home - May 27, 2013

One of the delights of living in the San Francisco area - and one of the
reasons I always have my camera with me - is the wonderful abundance
of beautiful Victorian homes.  Even many other houses are painted in
bright and beautiful colors that make you stop your car, pull over and
get out your camera.  I will miss those during my six months in India
but, thankfully, there is so much in that enormous country that I enjoy
photographing.  While I'm there sweltering in the heat, I'll remember
that I've complained my whole time at home that I haven't been warm
enough.  Right now, it's 61 degrees in Daly City, California and 90
degrees in Mumbai, India!

Monday, Mellow Yellows - Yukhoe - March 18, 2013

I have always loved steak tartare so, when I discovered Korean food, yukhoe
quickly became one of my favorites. According  to Wikipedia, "it is basically a
Korean steak tartare.  Uusually the most tender part of the beef will be used.
The beef is then julianned with the fatt removed, and then mixed with seasoning.

For the seasoning, soy sauce, sugar, salt, sesame oil, spring onion, minced garlic,
sesame seeds, black pepper and julianned bae ( Korean pear ) are used.  A raw
egg is usually added either on top of the dish or separately.  Pine nuts may be
added as well."

This dish is believed to have been introduced into Korea from China.

In Korea, meat has strict classification regarding quality and freshness and
raw beef requires the utmost criteria.

All is know is that it is one of my favorite dishes and I prefer it to steak tartare.

Monday Mellow Yellows - My Perfect Martini - March 4, 2013

Is it because of my advancing years that time seems to be flying so rapidly?
I can't believe that this past Friday was six weeks since my shoulder replacement
surgery. My beloved friend, Charlene, called me this morning from Florida.  We
met over 40 years ago when we were both psychiatric nurses on a child-
adolescent unit in Tampa, Florida.  We have been lifelong friends ever since,
traveling here and there about the world.  Ironically, Charlene had a total knee
replacement on the very same day I had my surgery.  Thank heavens, we are both
doing very well postoperatively!

I wish we could get together to toast our great success, but, Char, since it isn't
possible right now, my Monday Mellow Yellows post "toast" is to you.  We certainly
consumed a few Grey Goose martinis in the years of our friendship, straight up in
fancy glasses, or over a few rocks - but always with olives ( many, depending on
the bartender - half a dozen, always, from our Royal Caribbean mixologists! )
and a bright cheery twist of lemon!  I sure do miss having one with you, my dear
friend.  You are one of the few people who didn't freak out when I said I wanted to
go to India!

Monday Mellow Yellowts - San Francisco City Hall - February 4, 2013

The Super Bowl yesterday was quite a game,  Early on, it looked like my home
team, the San Francisco 49ers, was going to lose deplorably.  I felt really sad
because my youngest son, Jeremy, was in New Orleans at the game.  The final
score, however, was 34 - 31, not enough for a San Francisco win but, it
wasn't a slaughter.  San Francisco City Hall was beautifully lit and 49er colors,
nonetheless.

Monday Mellow Yellows - A Jaipur Plumeria - January 14, 2013

Monday Mellow Yellows - A Jaipur Lady - January 7, 2013

I am so glad to see that Gemma Wiseman is continuing the cheerful yellow theme on
Mondays!  Though I am 7000 miles away from my beloved India, I still have many
photos from there - to tug at my heart until I can return, hopefully by mid-May.
This lady I caught from my auto rickshaw as she crossed the street near me.
