Macro Flowers Saturday - Red Roses - October 29, 2011

Now that autumn is definitely here, with the leaves displaying their brilliant
colors and temperatures plummeting downward, florist bouquets and
photographs are the only way we'll be seeing many of our favorite flowers for
a few months!

Of course, we could always board an airplane and head to tropical climes for
a floral fix - or we can enjoy Macro Flowers Saturday from the comfort of home!

India Delayed - Wednesday,October 19, 2011

Sometimes, I feel that my sojourn in India is just not meant to be.  My
plans always meet with delay and this trip is no exception.  I was due to
leave San Francisco on October 23rd and to touch down in Mumbai two
days later.  Alas, my departure had to be postponed.  First of all, a
subpoena from the superior court of San Francisco arrived for a trial
starting on October 12th "to completion" for a case I did some years
back - with the ominous threat of arrest for contempt of court if I
failed to appear when summoned.

Reluctantly, I switched my outbound "free" flight to Korean Airlines
from L.A. since nothing was available on Air France, the carrier I'd
been booked on previously.  That frequent flyer ticket cost me $179
in taxes, etc...not too bad for an India round trip ticket.  For the
Korean Airlines flight, I had to buy mileage, for an additional $345.
Of course, I'll also have to buy a round trip ticket to LAX, making
my "free" ticket amount to more than $500!

The only nice thing about this is that I am allowed stopover in Seoul
with this ticket.  Since I've never been to Korea, I'm staying two
full days - though it will be really cold and my suitcases will be
packed for the hotter climate of India.  I do love Korean food
( well, if truth be told, I love most food! )!  I plan to ask my good
friends who own American Sushi House up the street what I
should see and do during my two days ( they have a Japanese
restaurant but they are both Korean! ).

I hope I can do most of the final packing and rent a truck to haul
all the debris so that Jeremy can get back from his two week vacation in
Mexico to find almost everything done.  That poor guy worked almost
singlehandedly to demolish much of my old furniture and garage
shelving and haul it to the dump.  He was amazing!  He'd just resignedd
from his two year position at Maxim Intergrated Producsts and was
immediately hired at Genintech for an amazing salary and wanted to
squeeze in a vacation before that job started.

I have been trying to let go of a lot of my belongings in anticipation
of moving to MUCH smaller quarters on my return from India.  It
will certainly take some adjustment.  I just wish the San Francisco
area had nice affordable duplexes like the lovely two bedroom one
my mother rented in Columbus, Georgia for about $600/month.
She lived in hers for 18 years.

I'm sad that my stay in India will now be much shorter.  I arrive on
Saturday, November 19th and return to Los Angeles on Thursday,
March 29th - that's 37 days less in my beloved India than I'd planned.
I will just have to win the lottery so this will not be my last trip!

Shadow Shot Sunday #178 - A Palm at San Francisco's Cliff House - October 16, 2011

Friday was such a glorious sunny day, I stopped briefly at the Cliff House
to shoot some pictures, on my way home from the CPMC travel clinic.  I'd
just gotten my final two travel vaccines, one in each arm - a Japanese
encephalitis and my pre-rabies vaccine ( hope I won't need the real thing! ).
India here I come.

Trichick's Photohunt: Public - Saturday, October 15, 2011

This is a new photo meme for me.  Trichick assign's a theme each week for
you to supply an appropriate photo shot.  You can find info about this meme
at:  http://tnchicks.wordpress.com/original-photohunt/.  Today's topic is:
public.  Here's the photo I chose.

This lovely shot was taken at sunset from balcony of the Cliff House in San
Francisco as we waited at our seats for the lovely young bride to join her
waiting groom and my son, Jeremy, the best man and the whole entourage
of wedding attendants and excited guests.  It certainly was a public place
as the Cliff House is one of the city's most famous restaurants and, wth
this view, you can see why.  I loved the setting, especially, for the
beautiful sunset, with the moon peeking through.  What a way to begin
one's married life.

Travel Thoughts - October 5, 2011

As I am getting ready to undertake the lengthiest and most exciting journey
of my life, a poem I wrote back in 1997, comes to mind.  I had just been
to India for the first time and I wrote the poem on board the Sun
Viking, a small Royal Caribbean ship on the continution of my
vacation which included several days in Bangkok and a twelve day
southeast Asian cruise.  I was away from home a total of a month and
made some of the dearest friends of my life.  I was, also, frequently
appalled and ashamed by the behavior of many Ameicans traveling with
me.  I read the poem at the passenger talent night on the ship and have
done so many times since.  It has also appeared in a Minnesota newspaper
travel column and was publshed on the International Women in Travel
website.

Travel Thoughts

As we travel about our shrinking globe,
Let us take the time to see,
This earth's most precious resource -
People like you and me.

Though we speak myriad languages,
And may dress in a different style -
A common bond unites us all,
The ability to share a smile.

As we pack for each new adventure,
Let's leave bias and prejudice behind,
Treating others as we'd like to be treated,
Remembering to respect all mankind.

We must pause to see the beauty,
In even the smallest things -
In the smiling eyes of a native child,
In the bright hue of butterfly wings.

Let us take good will as we journey,
No matter how near or how far,
And rejoice in the cultural differences,
That make each of us who we are.

Try to be less hasty to criticize,
As hither and yon we roam,
For if we're always finding fault,
What's the point of leaving home?

To be able to travel is truly a gift,
So be grateful as each journey ends,
For all we have seen and learned on the way,
For the joy of new found friends.

May we share our planet's beauty,
With the utmost respect and care
Leaving nature and all whom we meet,
Better for our having been there.

Wondering If I'll Ever Get to India - October 6, 2011

This past week, I haven't accomplished very much in my quest to pack,
get out of this house and head to India - but I have had a lot of fun.  On
Thursday, my dear friend, forensic toxicologist, Werner Bernhard, arrived
from the Bern, Switzerland area to attend a huge conference at the
Marriott Marquis in San Francisco ( over 1200 of these scientists were
here to discuss their specialty and share information ).  Werner stayed at
my house two nights before going to the Marriott, then came back for
three nights after it was over.

Saturday, he went with me to the wedding of a very dear friend of my
son, Jeremy, ( he was best man ). It was a beautiful event, held at sunset at
the Cliff House in San Francisco.  It was a fun occasion!  The food was
really good ( the Cliff House is a restaurant ) - I had salmon - and the
DJ played a great selection of songs which included many from the
60's and 70's.  Even Werner and I danced!

Sunday, there was a special party that I got to attend with Werner and
my good friend, Joanne Olivieri.  We were there for nine hours...so no
packing that day, just time with dear friends, more great food, much
laughter, good music, lots of food and drink.

Monday was my 67th birthday.  The whole day was nice and we ended
it with dinner at Manivanh Thai, a restaurant owned my my Lao family.
It's over by San Francisco General and I know I've eaten there at least
1000 times over the years ( probably more ).  Two of my three sons were
there and it was really a wonderful evening.

Yesterday, Werner and I went out for Chinese food and, as I've done the
past three times he's visited from Switzerland, I took him out to shop
for underwear!  I guess it costs so much more in Switzerland and, since
he has three sons over 18, he says it tends to disapper from his drawer
all too frequently.  We made a Costco run just before we headed to the
airport.

I really felt sad saying goodbye to him and was really glad we got to have
this visit together.  It was a shame his wife, Fabienne, couldn't have come
along but someone has to stay home to look after the pets, I guess.  I
would love to return to Switzerland again someday.

Now, I'd better make haste while the sun shines!  Whoops, the sun has
deserted us!

Mellow Yellow Monday #141 - Ocean Beach Sunset - October 3, 2011

Friends got married at San Francisco's Cliff House on October 1st with
nature dazzling all of us with this magnificent sunset display.  May
Nicole and Kevin have a lifetime of such brilliant sunrises and sunsets
and all the joy that is possible as they share their lives on this earth!

My son, Jeremy, was privileged to be their best man.

Camera Critters #182- Seagull Soiree - October 1, 2011

I've been to see all my physicians as I prepare for my six month sojourn
in India.  My arthritis in my left shoulder and left knee have gotten so bad
that I finally decided to have my wonderful ( and most handsome )
orthopedist, Dr. John Belzer, give me a steroid injection in both areas in
hopes of gaining some relief from the pain.  My right shoulder and right
knee bother me as well but not nearly as bad as the other side.

Neither injection was really uncomfortable and I am so happy to feel
some relief already.  Dr. Belzer cautioned me not to overdo use of either
joint, however, as the pathology is still there.

On the way home, I went down Great Highway and stopped for an hour
to look at the Pacific.  I have so much missed cruising since the loss of my
job nearly three years ago.  Thankfully, I've had the Pacific Ocean only
three miles from my home and a huge coastline for many miles in close
proximity.  Yesterday, there seemed to be a huge convention of seagulls!
As always, I had my camera with me and I got quite a few pictures, even
some of birds in flight which usually elude me.  I was helped by a good
headwind which kept them at practically a standstill in front of me!
