Ah, To Be Young Again

This evening, my youngest son's girlfriend, Katie Robbins, arrived from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, where she is a senior, along with her girlfriend, Amy, who graduated last year.  It is always such fun having a houseful of kids around, even if only for a short while.  My oldest son, Shawn, hadn't yet left for his Air Force weekend and Jeremy, my youngest, and his long time friend since elementary school days, Jorell Marsh,  was also here.  I made fancy cocktails for myself and the girls - a martini kind of thing with vodka, Passoa passionfruit liquer and Ricardo mango rum, with lemon juice and maraschino cherries and orange slices in elegant stemmed glasses while the "boys" drank beer.  The "children" were nice enough not to make the old lady feel like excess baggage.  They were all planning to go out dancing in San Francisco when Jeremy's other good friends, Nicole and Kevin, got off work at 10PM.  Nicole always graciously agrees to be the designated driver which certainly makes me feel less stressed!

Katie ( in red ) & Amy

Amy was trying to get the gang out the door - "I want to dance!"

I remember the days when I could go out at 11PM and party all night!  Well, actually, it hasn't been that long ago that I used to be on call practically 24 hours straight and often be at the hospital for that long, doing cases, without ever leaving!

Katie, Amy and Nicole ( the designated driver ), with her beautiful engagement ring!

Here's Katie and my youngest, son, Jeremy Vukasinovic ( 25 ) - he's complaining like crazy about the photo shoot anyway - "No, Mom, you are not going to take pictures for your blog...and, no, Katie, I'm not holding your hand like some stupid prom picture!"  Now here this lovely girl drove 250 miles in a terrible rain storm to see him!!!

Ah, finally, he stopped complaining and gave me a smile...but, you see, there's no hand holding!
He used to have the most beautiful, curly shoulder length hair which he had to cut for his new job in corporate America.  I kind of miss those tresses which went to Locks for Love.

I think he's laughing here!

Kevin, Jeremy and Jorell

Kevin and Nicole - the engaged couple!  Jorell is peeping over the top
Jorell  and Nicole horsing around!

After a final round of very good reposado tequila shots, which they shared with me, all were off for a fun evening in the big city, leaving me with memories of long ago nights in New Orleans.  I can't believe that was nearly fifty years ago!!

  4. It is wonderful to be young.
    Include the bitter experience.

San Francisco lets them amplify the dream.

  7. fullet - the bars here close at 2AM so I heard
them trooping in about 4AM - they usually go
to Chinatown to eat after the drinks stop!

Mickle in NZ - it's nice that the boys and their
friends are always willing to include me - at
least at home. Sometimes it's even their
booze! I'm glad I've instilled in them
    appreciation for the good stuff.

Jane - I did much better in my youth. I know
back in my New Orleans days, sometimes we
would come in just in time to change into
our uniforms to head to the hospital!

    ruma2008 - you're right, San Francisco is a fun
city in which to be young - lots of clubs,
    night spots, great restaurants, activities
and not all of them are too expensive.

Margie - you are a hoot. I should always go to
the bathroom before I read your posts.

lakeviewer - it is hard to keep up with these
kids...but it keeps me young, I think.

  9. What a lovely extended family you have!!! It's so wonderful to have our adult children include us in our lives. Wow...great memories!!!

You commented on my blog about your sleep apnea...seems like the medical field people are in the forefront about this problem. I just hope maybe one person can be helped by my posts...

I think your commenter Margie would be a hoot to be around!!!!

Much thank and respect upon making us part of your life.

There's a poster in the room of my young son, writing: "To give them a nest, while being young; to provide them wings to fly, once grown up.".

    Please have a wonderful Sunday.

  14. ρομπερτ - I am very happy to see you here. That
poster in your son's room has the perfect saying! The wings to fly are so necessary but it is sometimes hard to let them go!

corvedacosta - you're funny - I am so much older than these kids...I was 38 and 40 when I had the last two...but they are nice to me, anyway!

Bernie - they did have fun, though they are drooping about the house today, just now resurrecting for another evening out!

Icy BC - I don't think you're that old but I'm 40 years older than Jeremy!

Thoughtfully blended hearts - I didn't have my sleep apnea diagnosed until a couple of years ago...I never slept much, with being on call and out much of the night doing rape and child abuse cases...but, when I finally went and had the sleep study done ( I had to take an ambian to be able to sleep for four hours and do it when I had been awake all the night before ), I had 50
episodes of apnea! If you aren't following
Margie and Edna's Basement, you must - they are
    hilarious!

Welchcakes Limoncello - the drinks were yummy - I'm always throwing something together like that.

  18. hahahahahahahahaha!!!!! You were torturing your son, Carmen!!!!! ahahahahahahahahahha!!!! My son is 9 years old, and he acts like that when I pull out my camera!!!! hahahahahahah!!!! So, does this mean he will NEVER outgrow this??????? hahahahahahhahahah!!! :D

  19. Some great photos, and you have such a good looking son. I can barely remember when I was I was that young, I have to think really, really hard!

  20. Oh you had guests and very special people! Isn't so nice having your son back home with everybody else?

  21. Your son is so handsome Carmen, and his friends all look delightful! It's great to be young like them but we can still have fun at our age too! Only maybe with a younger bedtime..lol

  22. betchai - the day after these photos, we went out for Indian food. When I pulled out the camera, Jeremy moaned, "Not again, my hair is a mess." He had such a look of relief when I just took a picture of my food!

cinner - most of the time, I wouldn't trade my boys for anything, if the truth be told. They are a lot of fun.

c - I am afraid that your son may, eternally, complain about being photographed!! It's called "paparazzi syndrome".

David DeWall - thank you, kind sir. I do think Jeremy is a nice looking young man though I liked him better with his long locks...which he lost when he went to work for corporate America.

Ayie - I've got my oldest and youngest sons here right now &, thankfully, they help with the rent or I'd be in dire straits since my job loss!

Pat @ Mille Fiori Favoriti - Pat, I have rarely disliked any of my boy's friends, fortunately, and all have been welcome at our home. Except when they make way too much noice, they are never a bother and I'll usually have a drink with them, especially if they pour something good!

Sharkbytes - you're right, things are a lot livelier when the kids are around!
