Mellow Yellow Monday #119 - A Flower from the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco - May 2, 2011

This is one of the more modern pieces I saw during my recent visit to the Asian Art
Museum in San Francisco.  What a treasure trove of exhibits it houses.  I am anxious
to return soon to photograph more beautiful works of art.

Japan, In My Thoughts - March 15, 2011

Japan, In My Thoughts

In just the blinking of an eye,
Chaos can reign supreme.
The earth can shake and rumble,
Causing suffering extreme.

A magnitude 9 earthquake,
Twenty miles deep in the sea,
Created the killer tsunami,
And  people couldn't flee.

"The Land of the Rising Sun",
Is feeling so much pain,
The world must help Japan,
Heal and grow again.

This country rich in culture,
Tradition and great art,
It must seem overwhelming,
You wonder how to start.

Lacking even food and water,
Or a place to lay one's head,
We need to send out meals,
And blankets and a bed.

Families are completely gone,
Towns lie in piles of  rubble,
Problems at the nuclear plants,
Are another source of trouble.

The entire world is reeling,
And united in their grief,
But there is a global effort,
To respond with fast relief.

We watch with admiration,
This country stoic and brave,
That now endures such horror,
From a deadly tidal wave.

Our thoughts and prayers go out,
And, hopefully, we'll share,
Whatever amount we can,
To ease the suffering there.

Shadow Shot Sunday, #141 & Sundays in My City - Japantown, San Francisco, CA - January 30, 2011

This past week, after leaving the office of my urologist, I drove down Post Street,
the main street of Japantown in San Francisco.  The area, six square city blocks, is
the oldest and largest such Japanese community in the U. S.  It was developed after
the 1906 earthquake.  It is an area of Japanese shops, restaurants, a grocery, and even
communal Japanese baths with alternate days for women and men.  In the spring, the
annual cherry blossom festival is held and there is also an annual taiko drum festival.

Japanese architect, Yoshiro Taniguchi, designed the Peace Pagoda, a concrete stupa
which was presented to San Francisco by its oldest sister city, Osaka, Japan.  It stands
in the center of Japantown.

"V" Is For Vacation - Alphabe Thursday, June 17, 2010

"V" Is For Vacation - Alphabe Thursday, June 17, 2010

“V” is for vacation,
And I wish that I could say,
I was printing out a boarding pass,
And heading on my way!

I’ve done a lot of travel,
To places far and near,
But I feel a bit woebegone,
I’m staying home this year!

Last year, I went to Rome,
And cruised to Monaco,
And feasted on great seafood,
Everywhere I'd go!

The Coliseum, Rome, Italy

The harbor of Monte Carlo, Monaco

Grilled squid, Split, Croatia

I’ve been to far Japan,
A land of sights serene,
Such history and culture,
In settings most pristine.

Sensoji Temple, Tokyo, Japan

Hawaii, with its islands,
Has often welcomed me,
I’d love to feel its tradewinds,
While I rest beside the sea.

India is always in my heart,
Since my visit long ago,
A country of countless contrasts,
That left me all aglow.

I’m blessed with many memories,
To sustain me when I’m home,
Since retirement and my budget,
No longer let me roam!
