"Y" is for Yesterday - Alphabe Thursday, July 8, 2010

"Y" is for Yesterday - Alphabe Thursday, July 8, 2010

The Beatles recorded "Yesterday" in 1965 as one of the songs on their album, "Help."
Wikipedia reports that "Yesterday" has the most cover versions of any song ever written and "it
was performed over seven million times in the 20th century alone."  No wonder it achieved the
status of best song of the 20th century in a 1999 BBC Radio 2 poll of music experts and listeners.  A year later, "Yesterday," was "voted the #1 Pop song of all time by MTV and Rolling
Stone Magazine."  It was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1997.

While "Yesterday" was attributed to being written by Paul McCartney and John Lennon, Paul McCartney is its sole author.

I would be surprised if there is anyone around today, except perhaps the youngest of children
who does not know this song.

Here is a You Tube video of "Yesterday."  It certainly plunges me into nostalgia.

  2. "Yesterday" contains a harmonic "memory" for me of classic composers, maybe even back to Bach. Maybe that's why we always said about music (since the 60's) Bach, Beethoven, and Beetles?

Have loved "Yesterday" from the beginning. Did not realize that song had so many awards.

Thank you SO much for the rendition, and the sweet memory

  4. And "scrambled eggs" were the first lyrics Paul sang to his new tune. Thankfully he then came up with something better. Oh my, the weird little snippets of information I remember!

  14. Aww, look at young Paul. I adore this song.

Lennon and McCartney agreed to list themselves as co-writers on all their songs, but typically the one who actually wrote it, sang it.

  27. on friday night hubs and i went to a celebration of the beatles at the hollywood bowl...they did a beautiful rendition of yesterday...unfortunately, all that kept running through my head was a childhood version that substituted the words, "lepresy, i'm not half the man i used to be, there's an arm hanging off of me...."
    sick and silly!

There were so many great Beatles songs but this was perfect for my "Y" post!

    steveroni -
I think, for us of that generation, especially, the Beatles songs are very special. But it is really nice that all generations seem to be able to relate to them. I have so many favorites, it's hard to choose a number one. I always liked "Yesterday" - doing this post got me in a Beatles mood and I've been listening to them for the past few days!

    JDaniel4's Mom -
I'm glad you enjoyed hearing this version of "Yesterday" - it brought back so many memories for me.

    Mickle in NZ -
I never knew that about "scrambled eggs" - you are such a source of information!

At 65, I've done it! My poetry book - Life's Journey by Carmen Henesy - is out on Amazon!

    Irredento Urbanita -
Very interesting commentary, Valery. Definitely, today is running in our hands!

    Susan Erikson -
"Yesterday" seems just like yesterday to me. Of course, I am of the Beatles generation - as a 65-year-old.

    lissa -
I guess we all have our Beatles favorites. There are so many of them I like, I can't pick just one favorite.

    Nora Johnson -
I am glad you liked this "Y" post as we near the end of our Alphabe series.

I like so many of the Beatles songs...since I'm 65, I lived through all of them!

    fullet -
I love it that the Beatles appeals to all ages, including you, my young friend!

    Welshcakes Limoncello -
I can't imagine what it was like living in England with Beatle mania...I'm five years older than you are and we were totally insane over them here.

    Cheryl D. -
Yes, "Yesterday" was such a popular song of the Beatles...but, then, all of their music was so popular.

    Marguerite -
I haven't played any of the Beatles music in a long time but, after this post, I've been listening to all my old music!

    secret agent woman -
I remember those young Beatles like it was yesterday - my generation, of course.

    Jenny -
I've been so nostalgic ever since I did this post on "Yesterday" - spent the whole weekend playing Beatles music.

    signed...bkm -
Paul McCartney was playing in the Bay area this weekend. It's so hard to believe he's 70!

    magiceye -
The Beatles were amazing and those that are left are still writing incredible music.

    Self Sagacity -
It's nice that you like the Beatles...they appeal to all ages, don't they?

    Maggie B -
I got a kick looking at the pictures of the Beatles back in the beginning. Of course, they are about the same age as I am...and I looked pretty good back then, too!

    Terra -
I agree, "Yesterday" is one of my favorite Beatles songs!

Pat @ Mille Fiori Favoriti -
It is amazing to me, too, that Ringo, Paul McCartney, Mick Jagger and all those guys are older than I am!! And still singing!

    The Paint Splash -
I just love You Tube. I've been saving a lot of my old favorites from over fifty years ago!!

    Short and Sweet -
It seems like the older I get, the more sentimental I get about these old songs and my memories.

    Betty (picture circa 1951) -
Writing this post had me in the most nostalgic mood. I was catapulted back to my adolescence and that was one heck of a long time ago.

    Viki -
Apparently, this was the favorite Beatles song of many people.

    Christy -
I know what you mean! I was mourning the demise of my turntable since all my Beatles recordings on 35 rpm vinyl records.
