Magpie Tales 55 - It's Not Nice To Eat The Last Bite - March 5, 2011

It's Not Nice To Eat The Last Bite

We had a Meyer's lemon,
Growing in a sunny spot,
And it was just amazing,
The amount of fruit we got!

The fruit was oh, so luscious,
Brilliant yellow, full of juice,
I'd love it, when on Sunday,
Mother made a lemon mousse.

There was always lemonade,
To quench a summer's thrist,
My brother and I fought,
To see who got ours first.

I'd really love the times,
Mom made her lemon pie,
With the lightly baked meringue,
She piled on very high!

Of course, I can't forget,
And I'd thank my lucky stars,
When I'd get to take to class,
Her home made lemon bars!

At the yearly county fair,
Folks said it was absurd,
She always came in first,
With her lemon curd!

The lemon tree is gone,
My mother bakes no more,
She hates the sight of lemons,
Flashbacks of  bloody gore.

I was eating all the ice cream,
When my brother came from class,
And he walked in and he cut me,
With a piece of broken glass.

I had  fifty stitches,
And our lives forever changed,
And what happened to my brother?
He is totally deranged.

  4. Is that an ice cream or lemon? It looks like the first one in the first glance until I read the lovely poem I found my eyes are wrong.

  5. A very nice one...an account of a lemony childhood...but the tending was a tad sad....
"No One Killed Jessica" is a sad true story, the fight for justice still on...

  8. secret agent woman -
I know, terrible ending, but that's what the
    prompt inspired in me!

    Debbie Smith -
I tell you, I never loved the long winters and
shoveling snow After my son was born, I switched to the night shift at McLean Hospital, the psych hospital where I worked - acres of land with buildings spread out on the campus. They would plow the hospital road and block us into the parking lots. I'd come out at 7AM, ehausted and have to dig myself out to go home!

    Y. Ikeda -
Homemade ice cream is always so good though I've never tried it. I like the Filipino flavors and we have a few places here that do them...passion fruit, mango, lychee, tamarind,
    young coconut. All yummy.

    Tess Kinkaid -
Sad ending, I know...from my forensic nurse brain.

    Cyber Boss -

    Helen -
I happen to be one who loves lemons, in all kinds of way...ummm, lemon drop martini - I forgot that one.

It was ice cream but, for my poem, I made it lemon ice cream!

That yellow acacia tree just blew me away when I drove past it so I went back, camera in hand!

  9. Oh no, please tell me he did not really do it and that your relationship was not really ruined. Brothers can be pests, but this is a bit much. Lovely poem though!
