Japan, In My Thoughts - March 15, 2011

Japan, In My Thoughts

In just the blinking of an eye,
Chaos can reign supreme.
The earth can shake and rumble,
Causing suffering extreme.

A magnitude 9 earthquake,
Twenty miles deep in the sea,
Created the killer tsunami,
And  people couldn't flee.

"The Land of the Rising Sun",
Is feeling so much pain,
The world must help Japan,
Heal and grow again.

This country rich in culture,
Tradition and great art,
It must seem overwhelming,
You wonder how to start.

Lacking even food and water,
Or a place to lay one's head,
We need to send out meals,
And blankets and a bed.

Families are completely gone,
Towns lie in piles of  rubble,
Problems at the nuclear plants,
Are another source of trouble.

The entire world is reeling,
And united in their grief,
But there is a global effort,
To respond with fast relief.

We watch with admiration,
This country stoic and brave,
That now endures such horror,
From a deadly tidal wave.

Our thoughts and prayers go out,
And, hopefully, we'll share,
Whatever amount we can,
To ease the suffering there.

  10. This is so well written and fitting. It's so surreal when something like this happens. It makes you wish scenes like this would remain on movie screens only.

  12. That is a really thoughtful poem. I just hope that the nuclear problem won't get any worse. I should think the earthquake and the tsunami were quite enough to deal with.

  18. HOOTIN' ANNI -
How sad to be writing another such poem, Anni.
It hasn't been so long since we watched in horror at Haiti's grief.

    Priyanka Bhowmick -
It will take so long to begin to clean up the devastation and the continued nuclear threat just creates further delay.

I wish I could do more to help than write poetry but my prayers and thoughts are with the people of Japan.

    Manuela -
I hope I never have to write another poem as painful as this one.

    Jan n Jer -
In two visits, in the last five years, I only spent a total of about 12 days in Japan but they were such happy joyful moments, it makes this time so overwhelmingly painful for me.

I'm glad you liked my poem. It can hardly convey my feelings for the Japanese people at this difficult time.

    Irredento Urbanita -
I think we are united, globally, in our prayers heavenward. A Higher Power must help during this terrible time.

    Robin -
My poem came from the heart. I wish I had a million dollars to contribute.

That picture was taken at the lovely Sensoji Buddhist temple in Asakusa during my first visit to Tokyo. My friend and I had gone there for five days to see another friend, Sony Holland, a fabulous jazz singer, who performed for three months at the Park Hyatt in Tokyo. We had such a wonderful time there. I just can't picture that huge city now, with businesses closed, little traffic, dealing with the aftermath of this tragedy.

    Geeta -
I tried to express my feelings in my poetry. It is so sad that this tragedy happened - you should be feeling only joy with your move to India!!!

    Muza-chan -
Dear one, my thoughts are so much with you and and my other Japanese friends. I'm glad you liked my poem. Prayers continue for your country and I hope aid come in in great amounts.

    Maggie May -
You're right....enough tragedy with just one calamity...there was no need for a triple casualty! I am in fear that, now, there will be a volcanic eruption.

    Gattina -
I think that pagoda at Sensoji Temple. Asakusa, Tokyo, is so great for photographs! I am sure many people are praying there at this time!

    Barun -
Thank you for your kind words about my poem.

I hate having poetic inspiration from such a terrible tragedy. Japan should inspire nothing but the most beautiful poetry. It is such an incredible place and I am so fortunate I got to see it before this terrible earthquake.

    Rekha -
Many thanks for you appeciation of my Sensoji Temple pagoda shot and my poetry.

    Sharkbytes -
You're right. Japan will suffer a great deal more. Southeast Asia has certainly experienced great devastation in the past few years from natural disasters!
