"Q" Is For Queens - Alphabe Thursday, May 13, 2010

"Q" Is For Queens - Alphabe Thursday, May 13, 2010

Well, I'm not talking about the crowned heads of Europe or anything like that.  Elizabeth needn't feel intimidated.  When I talk about queens, I am referring to what began as a group of four nurses, of the forensic genre, all good friends, over fifty ( I won't say how far above that milestone we all are - our ages vary ).  We started out declaring ourselves "queens" when we cruised on the Monach of the Seas, out of San Pedro, California - perhaps over cocktails ( or several cocktails ).  We held our own coronation and the crew of the Monarch soon declared us the Queens of that ship, as well.  We began taking our responsiblities seriously, acquiring queenly paraphanalia, pins, pendants, crowns, t-shirts, even wine glasses, earrings, rings.  On future voyages, other passengers began asking, "Who are those ladies"?  We have inducted new ladies into the queendom but we original four will always be the queen mothers and the supreme rulers.  We've talked about allowing males into our court, if they show the proper respect and are willing to be our lackeys but, thus far, a final decision has not been reached.

It has gotten almost to the point of an obsession and has spread to other ships with the transfer of our crew friends about the world.  Land venues are now beginning to experience our royal presence whenever we gather together.  If there is room in our suitcases, we faithfully take our "queen" wine glasses to use at every opportunity and we wear our queenly garb in order to garner the proper respect.  If only there weren't such severe baggage limitations these days, we would have purchased the matching queen martini glasses!  If we sense that anyone is thinking, "What a wierd bunch of old whackos", it's off with their heads!

Here we are on the Monarch, complete with our wine glasses.  We're wearing our matching cocktail aloha shirts, purchased on a cruise to Hawaii.

Here's just a part of my crown pin collection:

  19. Viki - you'd be welcome to join the Queens at any time for an adventure!

  21. Sh@KiR@ CK - I've finally slowed down in my crown frenzy...retirement and this gigantic decrease in my income have necessitated that...but I think I have enough to last me a lifetime!

  22. laterg84 - we do have a wonderful time when we get together...sadly, for me, my job loss over a year ago, has left me with limited funds so I can't join them as often as before!

  23. Tracy - aren't the pins great? I'm not sure my daughter-in-law is the crown type but I can leave them to the other queens when I decide to exit the earth!

  24. Terra - I never had an interest in crowns at all till this queen thing came up. Now I spot them everywhere!

  25. Jenny - I do wear my crown pins but your idea of mounting them on black velvet and framing them is a good one. The other queens will inherit them, eventually.

  26. mbkatc230 - Kathy, we queens would enjoy your company anytime at all!

  27. Julie Schuler - I have stopped looking at crown pins...can't afford them anymore and figured I have enough! I love mine, though.

  28. What a neat group of friends! Great traditions. I'd love to be a queen with you for a day...

  29. Christy - we, queens, can border on the insane...well, professionally, we all are SANES
( sexual assault nurse examiners ), except for one, who is a retired sex crimes detective!

    ReplyDelete
  30. Melinda Cornish - thanks for the accolade to the queens! We appreciate it!

  31. Christy - our queen mania definitely has taken on a life of its own...come join our escapades whenever you wish!

    ReplyDelete
  32. Icy BC - you are a queen in your own right but you may join us anytime!

    ReplyDelete
  33. jeff campbell - we definitely get a lot of attention from the Royal Caribbean bartenders when we wear these aloha shirts witht he cocktails all around them. We try to have the drinks duplicated!!! Then we are a bunch of rowdy queens!

    ReplyDelete
  34. Steph - the queens are special to me in every way, professionally and personally. As forensic nurses, none are finer. I guess that's why we can have such fun - our work is so serious and intense, we need to be goofy in our down time.

  35. GardenofDaisies - these, indeed, are very cherished friends. In the 21 years of my forensic nursing career, I met some of the greatest people of my life. I certainly have many other very special friends, all over the world...I may not have much money anymore, what with my job loss in San Francisco's budget cuts 15 months ago, but I am indeed wealthy in friends!
