Alphabe-Thursday, "H" Is for Hospital, November 11, 2010

Alphabe-Thursday, "H" Is for Hospital, November 11, 2010

"H" is for hospital,
I hate going there,
Even when given,
The very best care!

They give you a gown,
That never stays tied,
And gapes open often,
To expose your backside.

Early each morning,
You suffer great pain,
When the lab tech arrives,
And misses your vein.

It's almost impossible,
To get any rest,
You're constantly bothered,
For some kind of test.

I'm the grouchiest patient,
With the surliest mood,
When I get these infusions,
Instead of real food.

To tell you the truth,
There isn't much worse,
Than being a patient,
When you're also a nurse!!

It really is scary,
To be feeling so sick,
And the road to recovery,
Isn't so quick.

And if that's not enough,
When you're given your bill,
You'll suffer a relapse,
And really feel ill.

This poem is written in jest, of course.  As a health care professional myself for nearly
half a century now, I applaud the quality hospitals with which I have been affiliated and
am honored to be in the ranks of so many fine physicians, nurses, nursing assistants,
and other staff, clinical and ancillary, that are essential to providing quality patient care
in our health care facilities.  Twice now, in less than six months, I have experienced
being a patient, both times at Seton Medical Center in Daly City, California.  I was
just discharged Tuesday after after a weekend stay on the 10th floor,  I could not
have had better care from all involved in caring for me.  I want to take this opportunity
to express my gratitude, first of all, to my primary care physician, Dr. Alice Yan, who has
looked after me so well now for a number of years, to Dr. John Lai, and Dr. Chin.

Thank you to EVERYONE who was part of my care at Seton, from the ER staff, to the
admitting personnel, to the absolutely outstanding nursing staff, to all the nursing
assistants, dietary personnel, housekeeping staff, chaplains and to anyone else I may
have forgotten to mention.  I hope I do not ever have to return as an inpatient but, if I
do, I feel certain of the same excellent care.  God bless all of you.

  1. Loved the poeme ! I can't complain about medical care in Belgium either. The one and only time I was hospitalized everybody was extremely friendly.

  2. Your poem is a hoot, Carmen, and mirrored so much of my own experience, especially that 5 a.m. wake-up call for a needle stick and blood draw. Those gowns! I resorted to wearing my sweats during the day, and no fired me!

  8. Hi Carmen -- glad to see you've got your poetry back! That's the best sign of all. Also glad you got such good care. Here's hoping you don't have to go back as an inpatient again.

After spending 47 days in a hospital I can say that your poem is right on!!!
The first 10 days I was in a coma, but after that I think I knew some of what was going on :D

The health is the most important in the life.
Cheerful San Francisco will treat you.
    It is the splendid medicine.
Take care of yourself. . .

    Thank you.

  20. So sorry that you've had to go into hospital so unexpectedly. That must be difficult if you *know* too much about the ins and outs of the illness & teatment because you were once in that profession yourself.
I do hope you are now completely well.
Loved the little illustrations and your poem. Of course it came from the heart, didn't it?

  25. Welcome home! I had a recent hospital stay and while I can chuckle along with your poem, and like you I also respect and appreciate all that was done for me at the hospital. Now I'm recuperating at a friend's house and am full of gratitude for all the wonderful friends who are helping me heal!

  31. Carmen, I'm so sorry to hear you were in the hospital. It does seem like hospital care has improved greatly...I feel like they are trying to 'earn' our loyalty and 'business' more than they ever have!

This was a great poem...but the rear hanging out part seems to have gotten better a bit. Or maybe they just have plus sizes available for us ummm.... larger women!

Thanks for linking. I'm sending you a little prayer of healing!

    A+
