Saturday Photo Hunting - Books - September 21, 1013

There were many traumas associated with San Franciso's massive cuts to
the Department of Public Health in early 2009.  My 21-year forensic nursing
position came to a crashing halt and, at 64, I retired.  My pension and
social security weren't nearly adequate enough to stay in my home of 14
years.  I finally thought, "I'll live part of my time in India so I can see old friends
and live less expensively than in the Bay area.  It killed me, though, to part
with so many belongings ( my boys always called my treasures "junk" but
they were precious to me.  I had hundreds of books - and 500 cookbooks.
I had to go through everything before I sent it off to Goodwill or gave it
away, hence, twice I rebooked my India flight, with a penalty.

Here are just some of the books that are no longer in my possession.
Hardest of all was discarding all my forensic books, conference notes,
and the like.  I just couldn't ( and still don't ) accept that my, profession of
almost fifty years, was over.

These boxes are merely a fraction to which I bade farewell.  The few I kept have
been in a foggy storage unit and are probably not worth keeping now.

  1. I can't imagine having to part with my books :( Nice to meet you though I'm visiting via Gattina's photo hunt :)

my rousing with books Photo Hunt blog entry for this week

In some ways as much as I hate to admit it I'm happy for e-books as I can store a library in a device that I can literally tuck into a pocket

    Happy photo hunting :)

  2. Wow, didn't realize (despite your headline photo) that you actually live in India now!

Re having to give books away, etc.: I can relate -- did a lot of that before I moved from Philadelphia back to Asia!

  3. awww.... it would be painful to give away my books. You have some very interesting books. I would gladly take them in if I had known you earlier. Such treasures.

  4. Its always hard letting go of belongings and I seem to be doing that all the time. However, getting rid of clutters makes us feel better, though books can be very personal.

  5. I would have had trouble letting go of my books and other objects in the past but in some ways it would be a relief if I could streamline what I have. The idea of moving into a smaller space has a certain amount of appeal to me but having lived in the same house since 1984 the idea of dealing with a move is exhausting.

  7. Hi Carmen, it is so difficult letting go of things we love and brought enjoyment into ur lives and in a sense great sentimental value. I recently donated a several boxes to our local library and somehow knowing that others will get to enjoy them gave me a little bit of comfort letting go. It was still difficult though.

Looks like you had a wonderful collection from your photos.

Hope you have a wonderful weekend.

  9. It's so sad for you to leave them behind if you were so attached to them. I have no feelings for material things, not even my 450 pieces cat collection. If tomorrow my house would burn down, I would only regret the house and not the content.
