Alphabe Thursday - "V" Is For Visit to UCSF Dermatologic Surgery - March 10, 2011

That little mole was always there,
On the right side of my nose,
When it suddenly started bleeding,
Then my concern arose.

I went to see my doctor,
And said I had to see,
A consultant specially trained,
In dermatology.

I diagnosed a cancer,
Basal cell in kind,
 Dr. Cheung agreed,
And so pathology did find.

Referral then was made -
I asked for the very best,
For Mohs micrographic surgery,
UCSF beats all the rest.

So this nurse becomes a patient,
Though I hate to play that role,
But to end up cancer-free,
Is my primary goal.

I thank the dedicated staff,
For all the good they do,
In their committed work of healing,
Folks like me and you.

This interesting building in Barcelona, Spain has many glass windows and metal pointed
spikes atop its gables.  I thought it was quite beautiful.

Magpie Tales 55 - It's Not Nice To Eat The Last Bite - March 5, 2011

It's Not Nice To Eat The Last Bite

We had a Meyer's lemon,
Growing in a sunny spot,
And it was just amazing,
The amount of fruit we got!

The fruit was oh, so luscious,
Brilliant yellow, full of juice,
I'd love it, when on Sunday,
Mother made a lemon mousse.

There was always lemonade,
To quench a summer's thrist,
My brother and I fought,
To see who got ours first.

I'd really love the times,
Mom made her lemon pie,
With the lightly baked meringue,
She piled on very high!

Of course, I can't forget,
And I'd thank my lucky stars,
When I'd get to take to class,
Her home made lemon bars!

At the yearly county fair,
Folks said it was absurd,
She always came in first,
With her lemon curd!

The lemon tree is gone,
My mother bakes no more,
She hates the sight of lemons,
Flashbacks of  bloody gore.

I was eating all the ice cream,
When my brother came from class,
And he walked in and he cut me,
With a piece of broken glass.

I had  fifty stitches,
And our lives forever changed,
And what happened to my brother?
He is totally deranged.

Sundays in My City - Bernal Heights Houses - March 6, 2011

Bernal Heights is a San Francisco neighborhood which lies south of the Mission District.
Cesar Chavez Street forms its north boundary and San Jose Avenue is to on the west
side. I-280 and US 101 are to the south and east.

The area developed after the 1906 earthquake, which it survived, because of its bedrock
foundation.  Houses were built here to accomodate workers after the earthquake and it
still has many of the small houses and Victorians built at that time.  It is not quite as
upscale an area as neighboring Noe Valley but it has become a residential area for young
families with children and its central shopping street, Cortland Avenue, has some nice
restaurants and stores.

I often visit the area and I have a dear friend who lives in the neighborhood.  Recently,
I had my camera with me and took pictures of some of the little houses in the area.

The Victorians in this area aren't the big impressive houses one finds in Pacific Heights
but I think they are cute.  I've never been inside one, though.

I've had a lazy weekend.  Got a call from UCSF on Friday and the MOHS surgery for
the basal cell carcinoma on the side of my nose is scheduled for this Thursday, the 10th.
I am so glad my insurance approved the procedure to be done there as that is the best
place and my dermatologist was pushing for this.

Today, I watched three movies on Netflix, all of them I enjoyed.  The first, "Brothers," my
youngest son had recommended and it was quite good.  The last one was an Indian
film ( I love Indian movies ), a very sad true story about an Indian model who was shot
and the complications around getting justice in her case.  I highly recommend, "No One
Killed Jessica" - there are English subtitles although, often, the actors are speaking English.

Skywatch Friday, Season 4, Episode 34 - Another Rainy Day Ahead - March 4, 2011

Waterlogged, the grass is mush,
From days of more than ample rain,
And now we're told there's more to come,
I'd like to see the sun again!

At least it isn't ice and snow,
And flowers have begun to bloom,
Acacias, quince, and crocus, too,
Help eliminate the gloom!

Enough of showers, time for flowers!

I am participating in Skywatch Friday and Friday Flash 55 sponsored by that dashing Mr. G Man.

Alphabe Thursday - "U" Is for Unexpected - March 3, 2011

It is wonderful living in the San Francisco area.  When one least expects it, the most
delightful things can happen.  Today, I finally got around to going to in to have lab work
my doctor ordered almost two weeks ago.  It was nothng urgent, really, just annual
studies that needed to be done.  I had to be fasting for them and, since I didn't go till
nearly noon, I was ravenous after the long wait while a dozen or so people went ahead
of me.

When I left, I turned around in the St. Francis Shopping Center up the street and, in the
far corner, I  noticed a sign that said, "Dim Sum Specialists."  That sounded like a perfect
solution for lunch so I joined the line at the counter.  What a disappointment.  Nothing
looked at all appetizing.  In fact, most of the choices seemed rather dry and shriveled up.
I mean, how dare they advertise like this in an area where dim sum really is almost on a
par with the best offered in Hong Kong!!  Totally annoyed, I left, enduring the rain again
and got back in the car.

As I put the key in the ignition, directly in front of me, I saw another restaurant, the
Burma Cafe.  I figured it would be as bad as the other place, in the dilapidated shopping
center and almost left.  However, my curiosity - and the fact that I had never eaten
Burmese food in my sixty-six years - got the better of me. I got out of my car and went
inside.  What an unexpected surprise!

The setting was lovely and serene, with statues of elephants and various deities and
flowers that brightened the setting.  While only one couple was dining when I arrived,
several tables were occupied by the time I left.

Connie, the young woman, who was the only one serving during the time I was there, was
very attentive and friendly.  She explained the dishes and made helpful suggestions.  She
explained that there were similarities between Burmese, Thai, and Indian food but said
that Burmese food was, traditionally, not very spicy hot.

Intrigued, I ordered much more than I could finish, knowing that my sons would be
more than happy to finish anything  brought home.

For an appetizer, I chose aloo puri, fried puffed whole wheat bread ( I had eaten that
before in Indian restaurants ), served with curried potatoes.  That was absolutely
wonderful.

Next, I had tea leaf salad!  Connie told me that was their most "exotic" salad.  It consisted
of marinated fermented tea leaves, lettuce, tomatoes, fried onion, fried broad beans, split
peas, peanuts and sliced jalapenos.  Connie brought it to me, beautifully arranged on a
plate to see before she mixed it up.  I had to restrain myself from finishing it all because I
wanted to save some for my boys to try.

I also had garlic noodles, some of the best I've ever had, with lots of garlic, scallions and
BBQ pork.  The lamb curry with potatoes were fabulous - not spicy - but in a wonderful,
fragrant gravy which both sons deemed delicious.

I had no room for dessert though I did drink two cups of Burmese milk tea, a sweetened
tea - no spices like the Indian chai ( which I actually prefer ).

The menu for the Burma Cafe is very extensive and there are many more dishes that
I hope to try in the future.  It is definitely a place that would be fun to try with a group.
That way we can all order something different and share!

Who would have thought that a rather dowdy shopping mall like the St. Francis would
have such an unexpected gem like the Burma Cafe.  I am so lucky to have stumbled
upon it!
