Camera Critters #197 - Feral Feline - January 14, 2012

There are so many feral cats around Sahar Village where I am staying in
Mumbai.  They seem to serve a purpose in keeping mice and rats, from the
nearby canal and cargo area, at bay.  Some of them seem to be quite plump
and sassy, indeed.  Here is one of them.

I am participating in Camera Critters #197 -
check out the site and join in the fun.

    1. Those cats don't lack for plenty of food around here...there are MANY rodents, that's for sure.

Glad you like my Matilija Poppy header. They are incredible flowers, growing some five feet tall. Very
interesting plant as they start best in areas that have
been burned, ie, post forest fire, etc.

    1. No, Jidhu...I'm not much of a cat person...I am pretty allergic to them...break out in a rash if I have them on my lap or close to me. I'm a dog fan, though...and my Indian family have a cute black dog that spends a lot of time with me.

  4. Are you sure he is feral and not a domestic one, he seems too well fed and unmarked by fights like other feral cats are, nice shot though:)

    1. Jane - these cats have an unending supply of rodents, since we are across from the international airport cargo area, also, a drainage canal. Also, sad to say, one can't walk about the compound without finding the remains of many birds that have fallen prey.

    1. This one if really plump. I don't think he really has to work that hard, either.

  6. This is an interesting coincidence for me. In the small town where I live now we have a lot of feral cats too. The one that comes around the most looks very much like that one.

    1. Too funny, Ratty. What does Isabella think of the cats?

    2. Isabella is an extreme cat hater. She goes completely crazy when she sees them. The cats know she is on a rope, so they strut by just outside her reach.

    1. Maybe that little mouse was Christmas dinner for one of these!! I've seen some actual rats over this way, when I was walking on the cargo area road. They look like they'd EAT this cat.

    1. Thanks, eileen...you should see all these strays that hover at the fish market in the village. They just lay there and get all the excess parts that fall to the ground when the women clean and cut the fish. No wonder these cats are fat and sassy.

  10. I wonder cats still bother to catch mice and rats nowadays, though they never seem to have better things to do like you, travelling, or like us, blogging.

    1. These village cats don't have to work too hard for their supper...it seems to present itself rather easily.

I am having a great time,rainfield...just enjoying every day village life, then I get on an auto rickshaw and head a few miles into downtown Mumbai and it seems like I'm on another planet.

  11. What a lovely looking kitty. It does seem to be in quite good condition for a feral, there must be lots of tasty mice about.

I've never seen such a food supply for kitties. Maybe that's why there are so many of these cats around.
